Eight former Cape Cod Baseball League players have been named to participate in the 2013 Major League Baseball All-Star game, and it’s possible a ninth could be added. American League and National League rosters for All-Star game, slated for Tuesday, July 16 at Citi Field in New York, were announced on Saturday.

Starters were chosen by the fans, while the pitchers and reserves were either voted in by the players or selected by All-Star managers Bruce Bochy (Giants) and Jim Leyland (Tigers).

The five American League All-Stars with Cape League backgrounds include three pitchers – Blue Jays left-hander Brett Cecil (Orleans, 2006), Indians right-hander Justin Masterson (Wareham, 2005) and White Sox southpaw Chris Sale (Yarmouth-Dennis, 2009) – plus two reserve position players – Astros catcher Jason Castro (Yarmouth-Dennis, 2007) and Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis (Cotuit, 2008).

Mets right-hander Matt Harvey (Chatham, 2008-09), Pirates righty Jason Grilli (Cotuit, 1995; Brewster, 1996) and Giants catcher Buster Posey (Yarmouth-Dennis, 2006-07) are the Cape League representatives on the National League squad.

Castro and Posey were teammates on Yarmouth-Dennis’ 2007 Cape League championship team.

So far, 34 players are on each league’s roster. The 35th and final spots will be decided by fan voting, which ends at 4 p.m. ET on Thursday, July 11. One Cape League graduate – Yankees relief pitcher David Robertson (Yarmouth-Dennis, 2006) – is among the five relievers vying for the final American League spot. His competition includes Koji Uehara (Red Sox), Joaquin Benoit (Tigers), Steve Delabar (Blue Jays) and Tanner Scheppers (Rangers).
