Chatham Anglers Shoot For Return To Postseason

CHATHAM – Summer Catch, the Warner Brothers’ movie that made us fall in love with baseball on Cape Cod, utilized the town of Chatham as its backdrop. The main character in the movie, Ryan Dunne, is a hot prospect in the Cape League.

Just like any other player trying to break through, Ryan is like many of this year’s Chatham Anglers trying to showcase their talents to the major league scouts. The Anglers are Cape Cod baseball royalty, as they are one of the oldest and most successful franchises in Cape League history. But the past several years have been a rough ride for the Anglers as they’ve fallen off the map and haven’t won a title since the 2001 run. The Anglers experienced a mediocre season in 2010, posting 20-22 record. This gave them the worst record in the East Division and the team failed to make the league’s expanded playoffs.

Sophomore centerfielder Beau Amaral (UCLA), returns to the Anglers’ lineup after his 20-game stint with the team in 2010, batting .232 with one double, five runs and four RBI. He leads the Bruins in batting at .316 with 17 RBI this spring.

There’s more power coming from out West in Kris Bryant (San Diego). The freshman third baseman should be a vital asset to the team this summer. During his freshman season, he’s batted .353 with nine home runs and 32 RBI.

Paul Kronenfeld (Georgia Tech), Tony Renda (California), Joe Sever (Pepperdine) and Stephen Perez (Miami) are all strong hitters who hope to continue their success on the Cape this summer.

Two-way threat Zack Jones (Berkeley) has earned 11 saves and limited opposing offenses to a .189 batting average on the mound, while compiling a .331 average and 23 RBI at the plate.

Baseball is a defensive game and to win you need strong pitching and that’s exactly what the Anglers have in Atlanta native Hudson Randall of Florida. In his first year for the Gators, he posted an 8-4 record and struck out 69 batters. This year he is 8-2 with a 2.14 ERA.

Coach John Schiffner also has a great supporting cast of pitchers. The ACC duo of Tim Cooney (Wake Forest) and Buck Farmer (Georgia Tech) are a dominant pair with great command of their pitches. Cooney is 6-2 with a 2.61 ERA for the Demon Deacons while Farmer has compiled a 9-2 record with a 2.91 ERA.

A strong arm in the bullpen will be Nick Vander Tuig, who has established himself as an ace in the UCLA bullpen. His 26 K’s have earned him all six of UCLA's saves in 2011.
