FALMOUTH ---- “Build it and they will come.”
Those famous words from the movie “Field of Dreams” were applicable last Tuesday at the Ballymeade Country Club, where a replica of Fenway Park, complete with bleachers and the Green Monster, made for a special night of comedy for the Falmouth Commodores.
The spotlight shone in front of the clubhouse on a perfect replication of the historic ballpark and served as the setting for “Comedy for the Commodores.” Complete with cocktails, food, and a silent auction, all money raised went to benefit the Cape League.
“Comedy for the Commodores” featured Boston comedians Tony V., Kenny Rogerson and Steve Sweeney, who captured the true meaning of living on the Cape. Their knowledge of the area had people laughing at the irony that they themselves experience every day. One even made the memorable joke of visiting the Christmas Tree Shop to “buy a bunch of stuff he didn’t need.”
The night started off like a true Fenway game, with the signing of the National Anthem by local performer Naomi Weekes. The team and sponsors were then honored by Commodores general manager Bob Clark and his wife, Christine, team president. A 10-minute video montage followed featuring the highlights of the Commodore games.
The players then mingled with the guests as the weather turned nasty and people held umbrellas above their tables to shield themselves from the rain. The unfavorable weather didn’t discourage anyone, however, as everyone displayed their loyalty to the league and its fans.
“It was really a magical night. The stars were aligned and it was an enjoyable and memorable night had by all,” Bob Clark said.
Ballymeade’s Mark Ventre made the night possible. Complete with a big screen television and a DJ from Two Way Entertainment, the comedy night was a true hit.
“Ballymeade did a great job in replicating Fenway Park for our comedians to perform in,” Clark said. “Hopefully, ‘Comedy for the Commodores’ will be an annual event.”
