Hyannis 10, Bourne 3: Hyannis struck first and never look back in a lopsided victory over Bourne in Game 1 of the West Division finals at McKeon Park on Thursday. Game 2 will be Friday at 6 p.m. at Bourne’s Doran Park.

The Harbor Hawks had no issue getting on base Thursday, kicking things off with singles by Blake Tiberi (Louisville) and Jacob Noll (Florida Gulf Coast) in the bottom of the second inning. A sacrifice fly by Matt Thaiss (Virginia) scored Tiberi and Hyannis was on its way.

In the top of the third, Brendan McKay (Louisville) drove in Braves catcher Jason Delay (Vanderbilt) to even the score at 1. The Harbor Hawks responded in the bottom half of the inning to reclaim the lead after an RBI singly by Austin Hays (Jacksonville) drove in Corey Bird (Marshall).

The next inning, a two-run single by Bird put Hyannis up 4-1. An error and a bases-loaded walk gave the Harbor Hawks two insurance runs in the fifth to make it a 6-1 ballgame.

RBI singles for Bourne's Corey Julks (Houston) and Nick Solak (Louisville) cut the Harbor Hawks’ lead in half in the top of the sixth. Quickly answering back again for Hyannis were Bobby Melley (UConn) and Tiberi, who drove in the seventh and eighth runs of the night.

Corey Bird blasted a two-run homer in the seventh to put Hyannis into double digits on the scoreboard. He ended the night 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored for the Harbor Hawks, who scored 10 runs on 11 hits.

Hyannis starter Devin Smeltzer (Florida Gulf Coast) threw a gem on the mound. He struck out four in six innings, and giving up nine hits and two earned runs.

Nick Jensen-Clagg (Kent State) took the loss for the Braves, and his night ended after 3 2/3 innings. He finished with three strikeouts, gave up four runs and walked four. Tyler Deel (Florida Tech) came in for relief and was able to get out of a two-on, two-out jam. He went 1 1/3 innings with a strikeout.

Offensively, the Braves combined for 11 hits but struggled to advance runners on base. CJ Chatham (Florida Atlantic) finished 3-for-5 with a run scored and Brendan McKay went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
