Cape League Honors its Top Stars With Awards This Weekend

COTUIT -- With the 2001 Cape League season winding down to a close, the first of several awards and honors to be handed out over the course of the next five days -- and into the playoffs -- took place at Elizabeth Lowell Park.

Cotuit Kettleer first baseman Bill Peavey (USC) was honored Friday night, Aug. 3, as the 2001 recipient of the Daniel J. Silva Sportsmanship Award at Elizabeth Lowell Park.

Cape League Commissioner Bob Stead was on hand to congratulate Cotuit Kettleer first baseman Bill Peavey as the 2001 recipient of the Daniel J. Silva Sportsmanship Award prior to the start of the scheduled regular-season game between the Bourne Braves and the Kettleers.

Peavey, a left-handed slugger from the University of Southern California and a hulking presence for the Kettleers this summer, was batting .283 with four home runs and 19 RBI through Friday, Aug. 3.

Slated for Saturday's (Aug. 4) game at Coady Field in Bourne between the host Braves and Wareham Gatemen, the erstwhile Braves' closer Ryan Speier will be honored as the recipient of the Russ Ford Outstanding Relief Pitcher Award. Before departing from the Cape League two weeks ago when he signed with the Colorado Rockies, Speier had earlier in the season shattered the Bourne Braves' all-time saves mark and later broke the CCBL saves mark of 15 set in 1999 by Chatham A's ace Derrick DePriest. On Aug. 4 in Orleans, CCBL East Division Deputy Commissioner Ron Conte awarded Orleans Cardinals second baseman Russ Adams (UNC) with the Robert A. McNeece Outstanding Pro Prospect Award. Adams, the East Division All-Star Game MVP was the top hitter for the Cardinals this season and played spectacularly at second base and shortstop.

Cast in the amber glow of sunset at Fuller Field in the late innings of the July 21 all-star game, Braves' closer Ryan Speier appears busy contemplating his future as a Major League star. To his right is fellow all-star Kevin Ool (Hyannis/Marist).
