Lone Star State Bolsters Wareham Gatemen Lineup in 2003


CAPE COD, Mass. – Wareham Gatemen Feature Texas “Down Home” Flavor


     “Remember the Alamo” will be a new battle cry for the two-time defending champion Wareham Gatemen, who feature 10 players from the Lone Star State, including four each from Baylor and Rice and two from U. Texas. Leading No. 14 Baylor to a 37-19 record are pitchers Mark McCormick (5-2, 5.71 ERA) and Trey Taylor (2-3, 5.26 ERA) and infielders Josh Ford (.321, 12 HR, 56 RBI) and Kyle Reynolds (.289, 1 HR, 26 RBI. Pacing Rice to a 46-9 mark are pitchers Josh Baker (8-0, 3.32 ERA), Wade Townsend (6-1, 2.06) and Lance Pendleton (0-0, 3.93) and OF Chris Kolhorst (.350, 2, 38 RBI). The U. Texas players heading to Wareham are catcher Taylor Teagarden (.319, 4 HR, 28 RBI) and pitcher J.P. Howell (7-1, 2.15 ERA). The Longhorns are ranked No. 5 nationally with a 38-16 record.


Georgia Tech’s Two-Way Freshman Standout Micah Owings Headed to Bourne

    Micah Owings has enjoyed a Ruthian season for the No. 10 Georgia Tech baseball team. The 6-5, 220-pound freshman sensation has major league scouts scratching their heads as to where he should perform. Owings, a pitcher/first baseman headed to the Bourne Braves this summer, has compiled an 8-2 record with a 3.81 ERA on the mound, while also hitting .306 with 14 homers, 40 RBI and a team-leading .613 slugging pct. His fastball has been clocked at 92 MPH and he was a second round draft choice coming out of high school last June. He will be joined on the Braves team this summer by fellow Ramblin’ Wreck teammates 1B/OF Clifton Remole and Kyle Schmidt, a right-handed pitcher. Another teammate, 6’2” shortstop Tyler Green, is headed to Wareham and was also a second round pick coming out of high school.


LSU Tigers Headed to Brewster

    Three LSU players are on the Brewster Whitecaps’ pre-season roster for this summer. They include OF Ryan Patterson (.362, 13 HR, 42 RBI), IF/OF J.C. Holt (.280, 3 HR, 26 RBI) and LHP Lane Mestepey. The Whitecaps hope to return to their 2000 form when they captured the CCBL Championship.


CCBL Board of Directors and Executive Committee Meeting Slated for Wednesday

    The CCBL executive board (6 p.m.) and board of directors (7 p.m.) meetings are slated for Wednesday (May 21) at the Ramada Inn/Hyannis. These are the last scheduled meetings before the season starts on June 13.


Scarafile Speaks at National Marine Life Center Meeting

    Cape League president Judy Walden Scarafile was the featured speaker at last Thursday’s Business Leadership Circle of the National Marine Life Center annual membership meeting. Her remarks were focused on “Getting Involved,” a subject she is quite familiar with.


Official Hotels of the Cape Cod Baseball League

Top College Players Invited to Tryouts Slated for May 28 at Wareham

    Top college players from all over the country will showcase their skills at the annual Cape Cod Baseball League tryouts are scheduled for next Wednesday, (May 28) at Spillane Field in Wareham. Approximately 70 collegiate players will be invited to participate in the one-day tryout. Hall of Fame Inductees to be Announced at First Pitch Brunch

    The 2003 CCBL Hall of Fame class will be announced by league commissioner Bob Stead at The First Pitch Brunch, sponsored by The Ninety Nine Restaurant & Pub, held at their location on Rt. 28 in West Yarmouth, Sunday, June 8 beginning at 10 am. Each of the league’s 10 field managers will give a brief preview of his 2003 team. Pete Sheppard of WEEI Radio (850 am)’s “The Big Show” in Boston will serve as master of ceremonies. The CCBL Hall of Fame exhibit is featured at Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich, MA.  Any media wishing to attend the brunch should contact John Garner before June 1.


CCBL’s Mass. License Plate Program Featured on Channel 7 in Boston

    The Cape Cod Baseball League’s Special Edition Massachusetts automobile license plate program was featured on Channel 7 in Boston last Thursday. It included a three-minute feature on the Cape League’s license plate program last Thursday during their sports segment “Gene Therapy.” The proposed CCBL License plate will honor the nation’s premier NCAA-sanctioned summer baseball league that can trace its roots back to 1885. The Massachusetts Legislature requires a commitment and partial payment from 3000 individuals interested in obtaining a CCBL license plate in order to proceed with the approval process through the legislature.

    AL – New York Yankees infielder Robin Ventura (Hyannis ’87)’s two-run homer accounted for his team’s only runs in a 5-2 loss to manager Buck Showalter (Hyannis ’76)’s Texas Rangers…Nomar Garciarparra (Orleans ’93) extended his hitting streak to a career-high 19 games in a 5-3 win over the Anaheim Angels Sunday…Eric Hinske (Hyannis ’97) of Toronto leads the AL with 18 doubles, while Red Sox infielder Bill Mueller (Bourne ’92) ranks third among league leaders in doubles (16)…Mark Mulder (Bourne ’97) of the Oakland A’s has compiled a 6-2 record with a 2.65 ERA…Garciaparra is fourth in runs scored (33)…Anaheim’s Tim Salmon (Cotuit ’88) ranks 7th among batting average leaders (.329)…Angels teammate Adam Kennedy (Falmouth ’96) is fourth in stolen bases (8). 


    NL – Aaron Boone (Orleans ’93) belted his 12th and 13th home runs of the season in the Red’s 6-3 win over the Brewers on Sunday. He hit his 10th homer in an 8-6 loss to Milwaukee the day before… Boone and Jeff Bagwell (Chatham ‘87-88) of the Houston Astros are tied for fourth in the NL in homers…Todd Helton (Orleans ’94) of the Colorado Rockies leads in runs scored (38) and is sixth in RBI (34)… Mike Lowell (Chatham ’94) of the Marlins is fourth with 35 RBI…Flame-throwing Billy Wagner (Brewster ’92) registered his 10th save in Houston’s 4-2 win over the Phillies….Former CCBL Playoff MVP Mark Sweeney (Chatham ’88, Y-D ‘89-90) went 1-for-2 in the Rockies’ 4-0 win over the Expos.
