 Cape League Announces Radio Game of the Week on COOL 102


CAPE COD, Mass. – Ten Game Monday Package on WCIB, 101.9 FM Begins June 16

    For the first time, the Cape Cod Baseball League will have a radio game of the week package. The Cape League will air a 10-game broadcast schedule on WCIB, Cool 102 (101.9 FM), with eight consecutive regular season Monday night games at 7 p.m., plus the CCBL All-Star Game July 26 at 6 p.m. and the league championship game in August. The first game features the Cotuit Kettleers at the two-time defending champion Wareham Gatemen, Monday, June 16. Sports Director Larry Egan of Cool 102 and John Garner of the Cape League will bring the live action from the field. Top College Players Signed at Annual Tryouts at Wareham

    Seventy-five top players showcased their skills at the annual Cape Cod Baseball League Tryouts last Wednesday at Spillane Field in Wareham. Several players have already been selected by Cape League teams as temporary players, including pitcher Sam Reece (Eckard & Martha’s Vineyard) by Hyannis; outfielder Justin Maxwell (Maryland) outfielder Steve LaFaivre (Wake Forest) and LHP Tim Layden (Duke) by Bourne; RHP Randy Newsom (Tufts) by Wareham and catcher Lou Santangelo (Seton Hall) by Chatham. Other players are expected to fill out team rosters as either permanent or temporary players, while rostered players fulfill their obligations with the College World Series or Team USA.


Hall of Fame Inductees to be Announced at First Pitch Brunch

    The 2003 CCBL Hall of Fame class will be announced by league commissioner Bob Stead at The First Pitch Brunch, sponsored by The Ninety Nine Restaurant & Pub, held at their location on Rt. 28 in West Yarmouth, Sunday, June 8 beginning at 10 am. Each of the league’s 10 field managers will give a brief preview of his 2003 team. Pete Sheppard of WEEI Radio (850 am)’s “The Big Show” in Boston will serve as master of ceremonies. The CCBL Hall of Fame exhibit is featured at Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich, MA.


Y-D Red Sox Planning Opening Day Festivities; Johnny Kelly to Throw Out First Pitch

     The Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox have planned several activities for opening day on Friday, June 13 against their inter-divisional rival Hyannis Mets. Included will be the Yarmouth Police Department color guard, Officer Stephen O’Brien from the Barnstable Police Department singing the national anthem and the first ball toss by 95-year-old work-renowned marathoner Johnny Kelly of Dennis.


Comcast to Feature Wareham Gatemen Show on local Channel 9

     President/GM John Wylde and field manager Cooper Farris of the Wareham Gatemen will host their own half hour television show on Comcast’s local Channel 9, which reaches five surrounding towns in the Wareham/Fair Haven/Mattapoisett area.


CCBL’s Mass. License Plate Program Available on-line

    The Cape Cod Baseball League’s Special Edition Massachusetts automobile license plate program registration is available on-line by visiting www.capecodbaseball.org. The proposed CCBL License plate will honor the nation’s premier NCAA-sanctioned summer baseball league that can trace its roots back to 1885. The Massachusetts Legislature requires a commitment and partial payment from 3000 individuals interested in obtaining a CCBL license plate in order to proceed with the approval process through the legislature.   Applications or further information is available by contacting Jim McGonigle at 508-385-6260 or e-mail [email protected].


Who’s Hot and Who’s Not – Cape League Alumni

    AL –  Eric Byrnes (Hyannis ‘96-97) belted a dramatic three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Oakland A’s to a 7-6 win over Kansas City Saturday. Byrnes extended his hitting streak to 21 games…Pinch-hitter Bobby Kielty (Brewster ’98)’s three-run homer rallied the Minnesota Twins to a 4-3 win over the Oakland’s last Tuesday. Left-hander Barry Zito (Wareham ‘97-98) breezed through the first seven innings, allowing one hit and striking out 10 Twins…Nomar Garciarparra (Orleans ’93), who had his hitting streak snapped at 26 games, ranks fifth in the league in hits (71), second in triples (6), seventh in RBI (41) and third in runs scored (47). Red Sox teammate Bill Mueller (Bourne ’92) continued his torrid season with a .386 batting avg. and leads the league in doubles (21), despite just 145 at bats. Todd Walker (Brewster ’92) extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a double in Boston’s 11-8 loss at Toronto and is hitting .326. BoSox teammate Kevin Millar (Harwich ’92) belted his seventh HR in Saturday’s loss to Toronto …Eric Hinske (Hyannis ’97) of Toronto is third in the AL with 18 doubles…Mark Mulder (Bourne ’97) of the Oakland A’s leads the league with an 8-2 record and a sparkling 2.36 ERA… Angels’ infielder Adam Kennedy (Falmouth ’96) is among the leaders in stolen bases (9)…Brandon Inge (Bourne ’97) belted a tie-breaking homer to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 6-5 win over the Indians last Monday.


    NL –  Mike Lowell (Chatham ’94) is second in the senior circuit with 16 homers and is seventh in RBI (43)…Jeromy Burnitz (Hyannis ’88) went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer to lead the New York Mets to a 4-2 win last Tuesday…Aaron Boone (Orleans ’93) is sixth in the NL with 13 HR… Todd Helton (Orleans ’94) homered three times with a career-high six RBI to pace the Colorado rockies to a 12-5 win over the Dodgers. He is second in the NL in batting avg. (.345)… Relief pitcher Billy Wagner (Brewster ’92) of Houston is fourth in the league with 15 saves…. Jeff Kent (Cotuit ’88) had three hits including a home run, as Houston beat St. Louis, 7-4. Kent, Craig Biggio (Yarmouth-Dennis ’86) and Jeff Bagwell (Chatham ‘87-88) combined for 10 hits and four RBI to lead the Astros to a 7-4 win over St. Louis last Tuesday…Kris Benson (‘Hyannis ’94) scattered seven hits to earn his fifth victory in Pittsburgh’s 9-4 win over the Cubs last Wednesday.
