Baseball America, considered by many to be the bible of amateur baseball, every season ranks the top 30 prospects who performed in the Cape Cod Baseball League.
Not surprisingly, this summer’s top prospect was highly-touted Anthony Ranaudo (LSU), the 6-7, 230-pound right-hander who was nearly perfect for the Brewster Whitecaps with a 3-0 record and a 0.00 ERA before signing with the Boston Red Sox. He was the 39th overall selection in the June MLB draft.
Rated second was slugging outfielder George Springer (UConn) of the Wareham Gatemen, who hit .288 with three homers and seven RBI in just 16 games, while fellow Wareham and UConn teammate Matt Barnes was ranked third after posting a 1-2 record with 20 strikeouts and a 2.18 ERA.
Rounding out the top five were stylish southpaw Jed Bradley (Georgia Tech) of Wareham and catcher Andrew Susac (Oregon State) of the Falmouth Commodores.
Bradley tied for the league lead with 44 strikeouts, while posting a 1.98 ERA. Susac hit .290, with five homers and 15 RBI.
Also finishing among the top 10 prospects were outfielder Brian Goodwin (North Carolina) of the Harwich Mariners, slick-fielding shortstop Deven Marrero (Arizona State), hard-throwing right-handerAustin Wood (Southern California) of the champion Cotuit Kettleers, outfielder Jason Coats (TCU) of the Bourne Braves and left-hander Lex Rutledge (TCU) of the Harwich Mariners.
Rated 11 through 20 were right-hander Anthony Meo (Coastal Carolina) of Bourne, outfielder John Ruettiger (Arizona State) of the Hyannis Mets, Kolten Wong (Hawaii) of the Orleans Firebirds, relief pitcher Marcus Stroman (Duke) of Orleans, outfielder/third baseman Zach Wilson (Arizona State), third baseman Jason Esposito (Vanderbilt) of Orleans, flame-throwing right-hander Tony Zych(Louisville) of Bourne, shortstop Levi Michael (North Carolina) of Harwich, right-hander Logan Verrett(Baylor) of Chatham and right-hander Andrew Gagnon (Long Beach State) of Brewster.
Ruetigger won the batting crown, hitting .369, while Wong was named MVP after batting .341 with 22 stolen bases. Stroman collected 10 saves, second only to Zych’s 12. Gagnon was 5-1, with a 2.10 ERA.
Rounding out the top 21-30 prospects were right-hander Brady Rodgers (Arizona State) of Cotuit, southpaw Ryan Carpenter (Gonzaga) of Orleans, right-hander Jack Armstrong (Vanderbilt) of Wareham, shortstop and Silva Sportsmanship winner Joe Panik (St. John’s) of the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, first baseman-DH Aaron Westlake (Vanderbilt) of Chatham, right-hander R.J. Alvarez(Florida Atlantic) of Bourne, power-hitting corner infielder Ricky Oropesa (Southern California) of Chatham, left-hander Grayson Garvin (Vanderbilt) of Bourne, second baseman Kevin Medrano(Missouri State) of Falmouth and speedy third baseman Andy Burns (Arizona) of Brewster.
