Mariners 9, Red Sox 2: The top-seeded Harwich Mariners bounced back from a disappointing Game 1 performance, taking a game from the third-seeded Y-D Red Sox on the road to force a decisive Game 3 to force a decisive Game 3 Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Whitehouse Field in Harwich. The winner of the rubber match will take on the Falmouth Commodores in the Championship series of the CCBL Playoffs, presented by Rockland Trust.

It was apparent almost immediately that luck wasn't on the side of the Red Sox in this one. Y-D starter Gregory Ostner (Binghamton) was chased from the game in the first inning, giving up four runs without recording a single out. Joe McCarthy (Virginia) led off with a single, and then C.J. Hinojosa (Texas) promptly hit a two-run home run. After back-to-back singles and a walk, a pitching change was made with the bases loaded, but it didn’t stop the runs from scoring as a walk and a fielder’s choice pushed two more runs across to make it 4-0.

Harwich was right back at it in the second frame, quickly loading the bases on two walks and a single. Another fielder’s choice and a passed ball added to more runs for the Mariners.

Meanwhile, Mariners starter James Mulry (Northeastern) kept the Y-D offense quiet. Mulry, who went 2-0 in two regular-season starts against the Red Sox, threw four solid innings to pick up the win Monday, giving up two runs on five hits and striking out four.

The Red Sox got on the board with two runs against Mulry in the fifth. A pair of errors first allowed Rob Fonseca (Northeastern) to reach base, then scored Andrew Stevenson (LSU) on a stolen base attempt and put Fonseca in position to score on a single.

Matt Gonzalez (Georgia Tech) put the finishing touches on the win with a two-run homer to dead center in the seventh to put the Mariners up 9-2. It also didn’t help the Red Sox cause that Harwich reliever Ronnie Glenn (Penn) was on fire all night, tossing five shutout innings with four hits and four strikeouts.

Though the Red Sox ultimately outhit the Mariners 9-7, they weren’t as efficient or timely with their offense.
