Orleans Manager Steps Down, Cardinals Hire New Man In 2000, Norris again led the Cardinals to a second place finish, but that season Orleans ended tied with Chatham in second place; both teams were forced to play a one-game playoff to decide which team would go to the divisional series versus Brewster. This year, Norris' squad finished in third place at 20-24. In announcing Norris' career move, the Orleans Athletic Association also announced yesterday (Aug. 14) that replacing the former Georgia Southern head coach would be former Cardinals' assistant coach Carmen Carcone. Carcone was Norris' assistant with Orleans in 1998 and 1999. Following the 1999 season, Carcone went on to manage the Newport Gulls in the newly established New England Collegiate Baseball League. That season, Carcone led the Gulls to the NECBL playoffs but the Gulls finished as runners-up. This summer, Carcone's NECBL team captured the league championship. Originally from Utica, NY, Carcone played his college ball at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He played in the Northeast Collegiate League and then served as an assistant coach at SUNY-Cortland and Cornell University. "The Cardinals are proud of the achievements of these fine young coaches," Orleans General Manager Sue Horton stated in a press release. "(The Cardinals) look forward to new opportunities and an exciting future for both of them."
