Who’s Hot and Who’s Not – Cape League Alumni

     AL –
In a classic pitching duel between “Cy Young and Cy Old,” Barry Zito (Wareham ‘97-98) of the Oakland A’s out-dueled Roger Clemons by hurling a four-hit, 2-0 shut-out win over the New York Yankees. Zito is 5-2, while the 40-year-old Clemons is 4-2 and was denied from reaching his 298th career win… Carlos Pena (Harwich ’96, Wareham ’97) hit a tie-breaking two run homer to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 7-3 win over the Devil Rays. The Tigers (4-25) avoided the worst 29-game start in major league history, still held by Baltimore of the American Association, which opened 3-26 in 1882… Jeff Conine (Orleans ’86) homered, drove in two runs and scored twice to lead the Baltimore Orioles to a 6-1 victory over the Royals… Boston’s Nomar Garciaparra (Orleans ’93) ranks second in the AL in runs scored (26). Garciaparra, Kevin Millar (Harwich ’92) and Todd Walker (Brewster ’92) had two hits apiece to pace the Red Sox to a 9-1 win over the Twins, backing a five-hit, no-walk, 12-strikeout pitching performance by Pedro Martinez on Saturday. Bill Mueller (Bourne ’92) had two hits and a run scored in Boston’s 9-4 loss to Minnesota Sunday.

     NL –
Matt Morris (Hyannis ’93) pitched a six-hitter and struck out six batters to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 6-2 victory over the Expos on Sunday. The hard-throwing right-hander is now 3-2… Jeff Bagwell (Chatham ‘87-88) of the Houston Astros leads the NL with 10 home runs, while Mike Lowell (Chatham ’94) ranks sixth in homers (8). Todd Helton (Orleans ’94) of the Colorado Rockies leads the league in RBI (30) and runs scored (31)… Flame-throwing reliever Billy Wagner (Brewster ’92) registered his sixth save in seven chances in Houston’s 5-2 win over the Florida Marlins on Sunday. Craig Biggio (Yarmouth-Dennis ’86) collected three hits including a home run to lift the Astros to a 5-2 win over the Marlins Saturday… Mo Vaughn (Wareham ‘87-’88) was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the New York Mets. Vaughn, who is batting .190 with 3 HR and a team-leading 15 RBI, was sidelined with inflammation in his left knee.
