Streaking Bourne and Chatham Lead CCBL Divisional Races

CAPE COD, Mass. – The Bourne Braves and Chatham A’s lead their respective divisions after the first two weeks of the Cape Cod Baseball League season. Winners of their last four games, the Braves have compiled the league’s best record (10-5) thanks to a balanced attack led by Clifton Remole (Georgia Tech) and a pitching staff ace Dennis Bigley (Oral Roberts). The A’s have posted an 8-6 mark due to the league’s top pitching staff led by James Avery (Niagara) and relief ace Zane Carlson (Baylor).

Armitage and Taylor Named Coca Cola Player and Pitcher of the Week

     Jon Armitage of the Wareham Gatemen has been named Coca Cola’s Player of the week for the Cape Cod Baseball league. Armitage hit a blistering .389 for the week going 7-18 with three home runs and 4 RBI. Trey Taylor of the Wareham Gatemen was named Coca Cola’s Pitcher of the Week for the Cape Cod Baseball League. In his only start of the week, Taylor was nearly untouchable tossing seven-shutout innings and allowing only two hits while striking out 11.

KEYSPAN Pitches Cape League 

     KeySpan Energy Delivery, the largest provider of natural gas in the Northeast, will celebrate the second year of its sponsorship Tuesday (July 1) with the Cotuit at Harwich game at Whitehouse Field at 7 p.m. KeySpan President Nick Stavroupoulos will throw out the opening pitch for "KeySpan Family Night." The KeySpan/CCBL sponsorship, which began at the beginning of the 2002 season, has proven to be a unique partnership between a collegiate amateur sports and community service. For the 2003 season, the Home Runs For Housing" and "KeySpan Community MVP" programs will continue. A new program to benefit the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Cape Cod will be launched soon as well. One hundred dollars ($100) will be donated for every home run hit during CCBL games (with a maximum of $10,000) to benefit the Housing Assistance Cooperation of Cape Cod.

Three Make-up Games Slated for Wednesday

     Three league make-up games have been re-scheduled for Wednesday (July 2). They include Cotuit at Hyannis at 5 p.m. and Brewster at Harwich and Orleans at Wareham at 7.

Braves Move to First in West

     Bourne rolled this week winning four of six contests to claim first place in the West Division. There has been no answer for the Braves pitching staff, which allowed just four earned runs for the entire week. Ryan Morgan (Boston College), Jake Glanzmann (George Mason), Tim Grant (Dartmouth), and Dennis Bigley (Oral Roberts) all earned victories. Bourne defeated the Hyannis Mets in extra innings Wednesday gaining a game on the division leader. Starting pitcher Kyle Schmidt (Georgia Tech) threw six scoreless innings and struck out five. Morgan pitched a scoreless 10th and 11th to earn the win. Cliff Remole (Georgia Tech) went 3-4 and scored the winning run. Glanzmann beat Y.D. Thursday 4-2 giving Bourne sole possession of first place in the West Division. Glanzmann pitched seven innings and allowed only one unearned run. Andrew Slorp (Santa Clara) came on in the ninth to pick up his first save. Mike Butia (James Madison) led the Bourne offense with two hits and two RBI. Morgan added another run on his solo shot in the third, his second home run of the season. Starting Pitcher Eric Beattie (Tampa) left Friday night’s game in the second after being hit on the knee by a line drive. Avery Still in the Lead 

     Chatham A’s James Avery (Niagara) leads the league with a 3-0 record and has not let up an earned run through 10 innings pitched this season. He has allowed only six hits and has racked up 13 strikeouts. Chatham’s excellent pitching continues out of the bullpen as well. Zane Carlson’s (Baylor) slider has helped him get three saves for Chatham, where he is tied for second in the league. Ben Ingold (Wake Forest) leads the league with 11 RBI’s helping Chatham move to first place in the Eastern Division. The A’s are now 8-6. Baty and Tucker Pace Hyannis Mets’ Attack

     Slugging first baseman Ryan Baty (Kansas) and sparkplug second baseman Jonathan Tucker (Florida) are leading the recent surge for the Hyannis Mets. Baty is second among Cape League batters with a .333 average (16-48) and nine RBI, while Tucker ranks third with a .326 average and leads the league with eight stolen bases. The hard-hitting duo accounted for five hits and all three RBI in the Mets’ 3-2 win at Orleans Sunday. Lefty hurler Zach Jackson (Louisville) leads the staff with a 3-0 record, including an impressive 12-1 win over Falmouth in the Nantucket Pennant Game Saturday at Tom Nevers Field. A.J. Shappi (Cal-Riverside) is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA, while submariner Austin Tubb (S. Mississippi) leads the league with six saves and eight appearances and hasn’t allowed a run. The Mets welcomed four Stanford players back from the College World Series championship this past week including catcher Donny Luce, pitcher Mark Jecman, outfielder Sam Full and infielder Brian Hall. Lucy slugged a two-run homer and RBI single in the rout over Falmouth at Nantucket. Individual Efforts Lead to Three Gatemen Victories

     Wareham improved its record to 7-7 in the Western Division this week and now stands in third. There was no shortage of offense or pitching this week for the Gatemen. In a win over Harwich Monday, Kevin Guyette (Arizona) went 7 1/3 innings allowing one hit while striking out 5 en route to his first victory. Mark McCormick (Baylor) closed out the game picking up his second save and has yet to yield an earned run. Staff workhorse, Jeremy Sowers (Vanderbilt) went the distance to pick up his second win at Cotuit Friday. Sowers allowed just one earned run and struck out 4. He is second in the league with 24 innings pitched. Wareham’s most impressive win though came on Tuesday at Hyannis 9-1. The Gatemen tallied ten hits, four of which went for extra bases. Chris Emanuele (Mississauga), Andy LaRoche (Grayson County), and Matt Kutler (Brown) all had two hits apiece. No performance, however, could out do that of Jon Armitage (Georgia) and Trey Taylor (Baylor), Coca Cola’s respective Player and Pitcher of the Week. Mohl’s pitching shines for Falmouth 

The Falmouth Commodores currently stand at fourth place in the West Division with a 5-6-1 record. The Commodores battled through a rough week, winning just one out of five games with a rainout against Brewster last Sunday. Falmouth was able to beat Bourne 2-1 Tuesday, with Billy Mohl (Tulane) on the mound for Falmouth. He went seven innings with just three hits and one run after turning it over to Chris Niesel(Notre Dame) who got the save. Jeremy Sladen (Georgia Tech) stands out for the Commodores as one of the Cape league batting leaders this week going .290 in 31 at bats.

Parraz, Baisley Power Kettleers

     Sitting at five and six respectively, Zeke Parraz (Georgia) and Jeff Baisley (South Florida) are among the league leaders in batting. Parraz raised his average from .217 to .293 over a five game stretch in which he went 5-16 with two runs batted in. Over that same stretch Baisley went 5-19, hitting safely in four of five games raising his average to .289. Cotuit is now second in the league in team batting at .227. Cotuit could manage just one win this past week. Paul Lubrano (Georgia) pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing only one earned run before turning it over to the bullpen. Kevin Brower (North Carolina) pitched the final two innings, picking up his first win. Josh Deel (Jacksonville) also pitched 1 2/3 adding to his league best eight appearances. He allowed one run and struck out two. Jeff Fiorentino (Florida Atlantic) led Cotuit with three hits in the game, two RBI and a stolen base. Malec Leads Y-D to Highest Team Batting Average 

     Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox hold second place in the Eastern Division with a record of 8-7. The Red Sox also have the highest team batting average of .272 with the help of Chris Malec (UC Santa Barbara). Malec leads the CCBL in batting average (.386). Chris has 17 hits, 10 RBI’s, and has scored eight runs for Y-D. Y-D’s roster holds another CCBL leader. Justin Keadle (Wake Forest) leads the league in strikeouts. The righty has struck out 28 batters. Trevor Crowe (Arizona) also has a strong bat. Van Note leads league in stolen bases 

     The Harwich Mariners stand at fifth place in the east Division currently with a 5-6 record.
Mark Reynolds (Virginia) still continues to hit well for the Mariners coming in as sixth best in the league for batting with a .304. Reynolds, a “temp” for Harwich, may be sticking around if his batting continues to lead the team. Reynolds explained as a temp on the team you have to push yourself a lot harder than anyone else and try to prove that you are capable to play in this league. “You don’t have the security of knowing you have a spot on the team, I go out everyday putting my all out on the line,” says Reynolds. Steve Van Note (Delaware) stands out for the Mariners leading the league in stolen bases (5). Van Note currently holds a .250 batting average. Pitching for the Mariners, Shannon Sprouse (Citadel) is still looking good with a 1-0 record and a 1.69 ERA. Macri Hit Number Four Over the Fence 

     Brewster’s Matt Macri (Notre Dame) leads the league in home runs with four. On Friday against Orleans, Macri hit the second pitch offered over left field in his first at bat. With 12 hits on the year, a third have been home runs. After a strong performance playing third base and getting hit by a pitch to be taken out of the game, Macri was named player of the game by CSTV. Brewster’s overall record is 6-7. One of the wins came from Bret Butler (USC) who is currently the second ranked pitcher in the league. Butler has pitched 16 innings and still holds a 0.00 ERA. Roberson Belts in Game Winning Home Run 

     Orleans’ Ryan Roberson (George Washington) hit the game winning home run in the bottom of the ninth against the Cotuit Kettlers on Tuesday. With one out the game was tied three all, but Roberson stepped up to the plate and hit a home run over left center field. Monday, against Falmouth, Myron Leslie (South Florida) went 3-4 with an RBI and a double, his fourth of the year. Lefty David Purcey (Oklahoma) holds the second spot for strikeouts with 25 in only 15.1 innings pitched. Purcey holds a 2.35 ERA and has allowed 7 hits. Sunday’s Action

     Y.D.’s Chris Malec (Cal Santa Barbara) hit for the cycle in their win over Chatham 13-4. Hyannis’ Tim Sabo (Seton Hall) picked up his second win at Orleans, 3-2. Bourne extended its winning streak to five defeating Harwich 4-1. Wareham shutout Falmouth 3-0 as Mark McCormick (Baylor) picked up his first win. In a slugfest Cotuit beat Brewster 10-9 as the two teams combined for 24 hits. 

COOL 102 Games of the Week in Falmouth and Chatham

     The next two Captain Parker’s Cape Cod Baseball League Games of the Week on Cool 102 (WCIB, 101.9 FM) will be Hyannis at Falmouth tonight (Mon) at 7 and Orleans at Chatham next Monday (July 7) at 7. Larry Egan and John Garner will call the action.

     Congratulations go to New England Cable News weekend sports anchor Mike Giardi and his wife Sandy for the arrival of their new baby girl, Tessa Paige Giardi. Mike is former sports editor of the Falmouth Enterprise and has formed a partnership with the Cape League this summer to interview players and managers in-studio on NECN’s “Late Night” Saturdays from 11 pm to midnight.
