Brewster Whitecaps
2007 Season Review

(22-19-3 – 4th in East)

BREWSTER, Mass. -- Had it not been for a slow start. Brewster may have been in the Cape Cod Baseball League playoffs for the second straight year. The Whitecaps put together a solid second half and were not officially eliminated from post-season play until the final week. They finished with a respectable 22-19-3 record.

Brewster fans had the pleasure of watching one of the best all-around players in the league -- first baseman Yonder Alonso (Miami). Alonso feasted on Cape League pitching as the Whitecaps’ cleanup hitter. He started at first base in the All-Star Game and was a participant in the Home Run Derby.

Alonso led the Whitecaps in every major offensive category and finished third in the league in batting (.338), first in on-base percentage (.468) and tied for second in both doubles (12) and hits (51). He was seventh in RBI (25).

On the mound, Ryan Cook (Southern California) shined brightest, baffling Cape league hitters as he compiled a 4-1 record and a 2.87 ERA. Cook worked 47 innings, allowing 37 hits while striking out 43.

A pleasant surprise for the Whitecaps was the emergence of Keith Shinaberry (Texas) out of the bullpen. Shinaberry arrived relatively unnoticed, but by the end of the summer he had compiled some impressive numbers. He was 3-0 with a save and a 1.47 ERA, led the Whitecaps in appearances with 20 and allowed just three runs in 18.1 innings pitched.

Brewster’s All-Star outfielder Blake Tekotte (Miami) led the CCBL with 22 stolen bases in 43 games. He also led the Whitecaps and was third in the league in runs scored with 30. Pitcher Mike Colla (Arizona) had a solid season on the mound with a 3-1 record, a 1.67 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 43 innings over seven starts. Lee Land (Wake Forest) also established himself as one of the elite closers in the CCBL, finishing third in the league with eight saves. In 22.1 innings, he struck out 25 batters while posting a 2.78 ERA.
