On Thursday, January 18, 2018, 6 Cape Cod Baseball Alumni were presented awards at the 79th Annual Boston Baseball Writers Dinner.  Our CCBL Alumni that received awards were:

Chris Sale (2009 - YD Red Sox) received Pitcher of the Year Award
Sale, that came to the Red Sox from the White Sox has been living up to his hype since he joined.  He joined the 300-strikeout club by registering 308 strikeouts.  Some other achievements were starting the All-Star Game, finishing second in the Cy Young voting and earning a top 10 finish in the MVP race.

Brian Johnson (2011 – YD Red Sox) received the Lou Gorman Award (Passion and Persistence)
Johnson bounced between the minors and the Red Sox for a few years but when he was called up he had a stellar performance.  Just this past May against the Mariners, he threw a five-hit shutout and struck out eight.  This marked the only shutout from a Boston starting pitcher and also marked one of 27 in the entire MLB.

Jackie Bradley Jr. (2009-2011 Hyannis Harbor Hawks) received the Defensive Player of the Year Award
He has been a great center field addition to the Sox with having 6 outfield assists and throwing out base runners as they take the trip around the diamond.

Brandon Workman (2008-2009 Wareham Gatemen) received the Comeback Player of the Year Award
Starting off this past season and not being the major leagues since 2014 no one knew what to expect.  He came out of the bullpen strong and set career bests with a 3.18 ERA, 33 appearances, a 1.210 WHIP, 2.5 walks per nine innings and 3.36 strikeouts-to-walks ratio. He bounced back to the minors then came back up to the show in July where he made another 17 appearances where he excelled.

George Springer (2009-2010 Wareham Gatemen) received the Ben Mondor Award (New England Player of the Year)
Springer was named MVP after Houston defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in this past World Series.  He tied two records that series by hitting 5 home runs.  He also became the first player to hit home runs in the last 4 games of the series. Not only is he an MVP on the field but off the field as well by being a huge contributor to giving back to Houston during their time of need.

Chad Bettis (2008 Falmouth Commodores) received the Tony Conigliaro Award (Spirit, Determination & Courage)
Bettis has not had an easy career with battling cancer twice, but with his determination he has overcome and became cancer free.  He returned to the game on this past August 14 and threw 7 scoreless innings vs. the Braves.

It is great seeing our Alumni continue to be leaders with their organizations and are proud of all of their accomplishments!
