Finn/Cape League Tryouts Sign Four Players

WAREHAM- The Cape Cod Baseball League is a haven for top collegiate players from the top programs around the country to showcase their talents.

With limited roster spaces available, it’s not often you see local players or players from smaller schools getting a chance to show their stuff.

That’s where the Frank Finn Cape Cod Baseball League Invitational Tryouts come in.

The tryouts came to fruition through former Wareham Gatemen President and General Manager John Wylde, who wanted to give players, who are often overshadowed by larger programs, a chance to play in the league. For years, the event has proved to be a jumpstart for players chasing their baseball dreams.

Last Saturday (June 9), 50 players from around the country gathered at Spillane Field in Wareham to partake in the tryout session, with hopes of netting a contract with one of the league’s ten franchises. The talent pool, although about half the size of a normal turnout, produced four players for three franchises.

Cody Clark (Hawaii), a catcher and a Las Vegas native, traveled the longest distance to attend the tryout, but the miles paid off as he was offered a temporary contract from the Falmouth Commodores.

Joining him in Falmouth will be Craig Schlitter (Bryant), a right-handed pitcher and Connecticut native.

Also headed to the West Division is Vladimir Camacho (Franklin Pierce), a left-handed pitcher from Jamaica Plan, Mass. His talents on the mound were good enough to earn him a temporary spot with the Wareham Gatemen.

Oliver Van Zant (Bowdoin) picked up the fourth and final contract of the day. The Westport, Conn native will be a temporary part of the Bourne Braves’ pitching staff.

Opening Day for the Cape Cod Baseball League is today.
