New Skipper Leads 2012 Whitecaps

The 2012 Brewster Whitecaps enter the season headed by new skipper John Altobelli, who takes the helm after acting as assistant coach last summer. He brings back two 2011 Whitecaps to lead both the offense and defense, with pitcher Austin Voth (Washington) and outfielder Jason Monda (Washington State) returning to Stonybrook Park.

Voth pitched in 22 games for the Huskies this spring, starting 11 games and sharing the lead with seven wins. He improved on the mound, dropping his allowed hits from 80 in 2011 to 56 this spring in similar inning appearances, and he held opposing batters to a .227 ERA.

A 2011 All-Star, Monda patrolled the outfield for 36 games for the Whitecaps last season, batting .326 through the playoffs and .333 in the regular season. The sophomore recorded 53 hits and 27 runs in his spring season with the Cougars.

The Whitecaps also picked up Cape League veteran Ryon Healy (Oregon) who played for the Kettleers last summer. An infielder and a pitcher, Healy appeared in 31 games for Cotuit last summer, batting .244, and was named to the 2012 Eugene All-Regional Team this spring for the Ducks.

Joining the team for their first summers on the Cape are catcher Spencer Navin (Vanderbilt), sophomore right-hander Brady Kirkpatrick (Maryland), and Chase McDowell (Rice), who returned to the mound in 2012 for the Owls after a season-ending injury in 2011.

Mixing things up, Altobelli is changing home dugouts this summer as well, moving the team from the first base line to the third base line. The team opens at home on Saturday, June 16th at 5 p.m. against Orleans after playing two games on the road to start the season.
