Red Sox Win Series 3-1 Over Rays

The Boston Red Sox knocked the 100-win Tampa Bay Rays out of the playoffs Monday night. The Red Sox won both games three and four in walk-off fashion.

Garrett Whitlock (Chatham ‘16) got the win for the Red Sox in the clinching game, pitching two scoreless innings. Whitlock finished the series totaling 3.1 innings without allowing a hit.

Adam Ottavino (Harwich ‘05) and Matt Barnes (Wareham ‘10) also did not allow a run in their respective relief appearances during the ALDS.

The Red Sox will meet the Houston Astros in the ALCS. It’ll be a rematch of the 2018 ALCS, when the Red Sox won the series 4-1.

Astros Win Series 3-1 Over White Sox

For the fifth consecutive season, the Houston Astros are advancing to the ALCS.

After Gavin Sheets (Wareham ‘16) put the White Sox ahead early with a solo home run, the Astros scored 10 unanswered runs to close out the series with a 10-1 victory.

Ryan Stanek (Bourne ‘11) and Kendall Graveman (Cotuit ‘11) combined for 1.1 scoreless innings of relief out of the Astros bullpen Tuesday afternoon.

The ALCS will begin Friday night in Houston.

Braves Win Series 3-1 Over Brewers

The Atlanta Braves are headed back to the NLCS, after falling one game short of the World Series in 2020.

The Milwaukee Brewers trio of former Cape League starting pitchers shined in the series, but the Brewers could not generate enough offense. Corbin Burnes (Orleans ‘15), Brandon Woodruff (Harwich ‘12), and Eric Lauer (Orleans ‘15) combined for 17 innings and just four earned runs allowed in their appearances throughout the short series.

The Braves will await the winner from Game 5 in the Dodgers vs. Giants NLDS.

Giants and Dodgers Headed to Decisive Game Five

When the San Francisco Giants took the field Tuesday night, every position was occupied by a former Cape Leaguer. Unfortunately for the Giants, it was the Dodgers former Cape Leaguer who would come out on top.

Walker Buehler (Y-D ‘14), pitching on short rest for Los Angeles, allowed just one run over 4.1 innings. When Buehler departed the game, Los Angeles held a 4-1 lead and was on their way to forcing a decisive Game 5 Thursday.

The Dodgers will be looking to make their fourth NLCS in five years, while the Giants hope to return for the first time since 2014.
