Three Potential Landing Spots for Kris Bryant

In the abbreviated offseason, rumors circled around former Chatham Angler and current free agent Kris Bryant. Bryant spent 2011 in the Cape where he hit .223 with 16 runs, 16 RBIs and 3 HR over 37 games. Fast forward 10 years and Bryant has recently completed a half season rental with the San Francisco Giants before losing in the Divisional Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Bryant will be entering his age 30 season (eighth in the big leagues) and will be looking for a large, long-term deal. Almost every team has some sort of interest in Bryant, but let’s look at three teams that would make the most sense.

Run It Back

One of the less talked about options that seems like a reasonable idea for Bryant is to return to the Giants. Bryant was a fan favorite during his short time in the Bay Area and it seemed that he also enjoyed his time there, hitting .262 over 51 games. Bryant would seem to have a spot at either corner almost certainly locked up in 2022, and he saw last season, the Giants seem to be a few pieces away from repeating what was a magical season. Recency bias may play a role in Bryant’s decision and this could be beneficial to the Giants.

Reunited

We don’t really see many players publicly parading for players to join their team like in other sports. However, one of those vocal players in the league is Phillies right fielder, Bryce Harper. Coincidentally, Harper and Bryant both grew up in Las Vegas, playing both with and against each other growing up. Aside from the familiarity, Bryant would be a huge upgrade at third base and even in left field. While the Phillies desperately need bullpen arms, reuniting childhood stars is not out of the picture.

Moving Up North

One of the most exciting options for Bryant this offseason would be to take his talents north to the Seattle Mariners. With the departure of another Chatham Angler in Kyle Seager, the door opens for another building block at the hot corner. It sounds like a match made in heaven for the 30 year old Kris Bryant to take the reins and try to lead this young core to a playoff appearance. The Mariners have shown their willingness to spend money on talent and they look to be gearing up for a winning season. Bryant could be the missing piece that pushes the M’s over the top.
