A veteran of the Cape League for almost 30 years, Sol Yas has announced his retirement from the league.
Yas has served the league in many capacities primarily including the General Manager position of the Brewster Whitecaps for seven years and for the last 21 years, as the Deputy Commissioner and Director of Officiating at the league level.
Yas’s impact on the league has been undeniable. Constructing competitive teams on an annual basis is no small feat, yet he consistently delivered with Brewster. The highlights of his time in Brewster include a league championship in 2000 over Hyannis and recruiting Sean Casey.
As Deputy Commissioner and Director of Officiating, Yas’s responsibilities were indispensable to ensure Cape League games proceeded without a hitch. Yas worked closely with the CCBL commissioner, other deputy commissioners and the league's umpire assignor, Nick Zibelli.
“Watching Sol and having the chance to work with him has been fantastic,” said Eric Zmuda, Cape League Commissioner.
“Personally, Sol really cared about the product and the people that are involved each and every day. He really wanted to do the best job that he could for the players, coaching staff and everyone involved.”
One of his passions was announcing the Home Run Derby at the All-Star game, and helping select the Star of Stars Playoff MVP. It exemplified Yas’s passion for the combination of the league and its community.
Yas was inducted into the CCBL Hall of Fame this past November and was a previous recipient of the Richard Sullivan Lifetime Achievement Award. He has also found himself involved with the community in numerous ways outside of Cape League baseball. He’s played in a men’s senior league, including an induction into the Rhode Island Senior Baseball league in 2011 and has been an umpire for High School, Babe Ruth, AAU and Little League Baseball.
The league thanks Yas for his time, dedication and service and wishes him and his family the best in retirement.
