BOSTON ---- The last Wareham Gatemen to earn Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star MVP for the West is now pitching regularly in Fenway Park. Zach Wilson (Arizona State) hopes to follow in Daniel Bard’s footsteps.

Wilson’s RBI double earned him West MVP honors in this year’s game at Fenway, leading his club to a 5-0 win over the East.

Wilson came to the plate in the top of the seventh, with the West ahead by three runs. After Daniel Bowman (Coastal Carolina) struck out swinging and John Ruettiger (Arizona State) flied to right, the starting right-fielder doubled off the Green Monster, scoring KC Serna (Oregon).

“Just knowing you get to play at Fenway and to hit off the legendary Monster is a feeling like no other,” Wilson said. “You just took it all pitch-by-pitch and go in there with the same approach every time. Hitting is contagious. Once you get a rally going, you just keep going.”

The awestruck Wilson said that he was unaware of this accomplishment following the July 28th MVP voting.

“I didn’t even know (Bard) was the former MVP,” he said. “It’s just a great experience. I really don’t even know how to say it. It’s just awesome.”
