A Big Celebration For Chatham’s JR Higley

CHATHAM, MA – While playing Saturday night at the home field of the Whitecaps, JR Higley got the opportunity to celebrate two triumphs in one night.

Chatham’s #7, a freshman at Sacramento State, celebrated his 20th birthday and a win led by his outstanding performance. Higley scored the first run of the game in the 2nd inning to put the A’s on top and set the tone for the team. Brewster got the chance for a comeback but not for long. The unstoppable left fielder tied the game in the sixth inning. However, this standout player was not finished; he wanted a victory on his birthday. By the eighth inning, Higley was still on fire and scored the game winning run to allow the A’s a sense of pride while walking off the field at the Stony Brook School.

Higley was born June 21, 1988. Who knew that 20 years later this ballplayer would be invited to join the Cape Cod Baseball League? He accepted the invitation knowing this would be a great opportunity for him. When discussing what is most important to him, Higley stated, “The most important thing in this league is to be competitive, there is a lot of talent in the Cape Cod Baseball League so you need to stand out.”

When catching up with JR, he explained that his favorite part of the Cape so far is, “being with the guys, it’s a great group of guys, a lot of fun, and of course baseball.” He also went on about the major differences between college baseball and the Cape League explaining that the use of wood bats takes time to adjust to, as well as the competition of every team putting their best pitchers and hitters out there.

JR’s natural athletic ability brought him to the attention of the Washington Nationals in which he was a 9th round pick. He says that he has until August 15th to make an agreement and if not, then he will continue at Sacramento State.

Living with a host was no problem for JR. He is living with Rachel Geylin in Chatham. It is a first for Geylin as a host. It was not difficult to adjust and he receives support from her at his games.
