THIS WEEK IN THE CAPE LEAGUE
(19 July – 25 July 2009)

Coca Cola Pitcher and Player of the Week

COCA COLA PITCHER OF THE WEEK:

Tyler Lyons, Chatham LHP

The first half of this week’s Coca Cola Co-Pitchers of the Week has been awarded to Chatham starter Tyler Lyons (Oklahoma State). The 6-2 southpaw earned the accolade this week by shutting out Wareham on August 19th, securing a 1-0 victory for his Anglers. Lyons surrendered only two hits in a complete game performance, fanning 11 Gatemen without walking a batter. Lyons now has two wins and two losses on the season, sporting a healthy 2.20 ERA.

Tyler Lyons is a junior at Oklahoma State, where he has made a name as one of the top starters in the Big 12. His strongest season at OSU was in 2008, when he ranked second in the conference and fourth nationally in wins, with 12. Lyons was drafted in the 10th round of this year’s Major League Draft by the New York Yankees.

COCA COLA PITCHER OF THE WEEK:

Jake Buchanan, Cotuit RHP

The second Coca Cola Pitcher of the Week is Jake Buchanan (NC State) of Cotuit. The league leader in ERA at 0.50, Buchanan turned in another dominant performance this week. In a shutout of Hyannis, the righty scattered three hits, walked one, and struck out 11. The win improved his record to 2-1 on the season.

Buchanan is a junior at NC State. He bounced back and forth between the bullpen and starting rotation before establishing himself as a starter this past season. The Kettleers look to Buchanan to continue his effectiveness on the mound as the playoff push begins.

COCA COLA PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Robert Segedin, Bourne 3B

Robert Segedin has been named the Coca Cola Player of the Week, joining the ranks of numerous Braves teammates who have already secured the award: right-handed pitcher Eric Cantrell, left-handed pitcher Bryan Morgado, and first baseman Kyle Roller. Segedin put together a remarkable week at the plate, recording nine hits in only four games for a batting average of .600. Segedin’s slugging percentage also stands at a strong .867, with two doubles and a triple. His total batting average this season stands at a solid .292.

As a sophomore at Tulane, Segedin was named a preseason All-American, but injury resulted in a redshirted year this past season. As a freshman, he earned a spot on the Conference USA All-Freshman team and tied for the team lead with a .322 batting average. Segedin doubled as a reliever that year for the Green Wave, recording five saves.
