Cotuit, MA -- While bats were sluggish for the Braves, as the team was hitless until the 5th inning, L.J. Mazilli (UConn) helped motor Bourne past top seeded Cotuit Kettleers with a three-run home-run in the 8th, advancing his team to the second round of the CCBL Western Division playoffs.

Before Mazilli’s shot was heard around Lowell Park, the game was neck and neck with powerful pitching performances from starting pitchers, Bourne’s Chad Green (Louisville) and Cotuit’s Dusty Isaac (Georgia Tech). Despite Green’s pitching prowess, the Kettleer’s scored the first run of the game with a Jacob May (Coastal Carolina) RBI single in the 2nd. The tally remained 1-0 until the Braves evened out the score in the top of the eighth, with a Steve

Goldstein (Stonybrook) RBI bunt, which sent teammate Joe Jackson (The Citadel) home. As the 8th inning progressed, with two outs on the board, and two runners on base, L.J. Mazilli stepped to the plate, sending a high-flying shot just barely over the centerfield fence. The three-run homerun proved devastating, as the Kettleers were unable to gain the lead, despite an impressive last ditch effort from Cotuit’s Tony Kemp (Vanderbilt) who hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth, closing the gap to a 5-4 score.

The Bourne Braves held strong in the ninth, burying an insurance run with a Trent Gilbert (Arizona) RBI double, sealing there lead to 6-4. With one inning left to save their playoff hopes, the Kettleers could not rally back. The Cotuit Kettleer’s end their Cape League season with a notable 30-15 record.

Bourne will cross the bridge to Spillane Field tomorrow, Monday, August 13th, to take on the Wareham Gateman in the second round of CCBL playoffs. Start time for the game is 7pm.
