Anglers' Schiraldi named Outstanding Pitcher08/07/2013 6:12 PM Article By: CHATHAM, Mass. – Even before leading his Chatham Anglers to a big win over the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in the first game of their Round 1 playoff series, Lukas Schiraldi (Texas) was having a good night. During pregame ceremonies, Schiraldi was awarded the BFC Whitehouse Outstanding Pitcher of the Year title. The Anglers ace was solid all year long for the President’s Trophy-winning team, and was especially strong down the stretch. Schiraldi was overlooked as an All-Star, despite posting a 2-1 with a 1.75 ERA and 20 strikeouts at the time. He went 2-0 with no earned runs allowed and seven strikeouts in his final two starts of the season, and finished the regular season with a 4-1 record, a league-leading 1.20 ERA and an astounding 1.01 WHIP.
In the playoff opener on Tuesday night, Schiraldi had a dominant outing against Y-D in a 6-0 victory for Chatham. He pitched a personal season-high seven innings against the Red Sox, and did not allow a single run. He gave up two hits, a double in the second and a single in the seventh, retiring 16 in a row between them. He had another personal season-high in strikeouts with six, and did not walk a single batter.
The Anglers, who closed out the best-of-three series over Y-D with a 9-4 victory on Wednesday, will get the chance to see Schiraldi make another start as they continue the quest for their first championship since 1998.
After posting a 2.84 ERA and winning nine games at Navarro Junior College last year, Schiraldi is headed to the University of Texas this fall. The Longhorns finished dead last in the Big 12 last season, and could use Schiraldi’s skill set to try to bounce back next season. |
