Aaron Judge Catches Fire

“Paired with the return of Aaron Judge (Brewster ‘12), the Yankees are hopeful to begin the climb out from the bottom of the AL East.” That was the ending of our alumni recap last week. Well, in the past week, Judge has slashed .269/.424/.846 with five home runs. He had two multi-home run games, both coming against division rivals. The Yankees have moved up into fourth place in the AL East, but the division as a whole is slowly starting to tighten, after the Rays raced out to an early lead in April.

Kyle Bradish Shoves

Kyle Bradish (Falmouth ‘17) made two starts last week, delivering quality outings in both. In his first, Bradish allowed four base runners and no earned runs over six innings. In his second, Bradish allowed just four base runners and one earned run, this time over 6.2 innings. On the season, Bradish has a 3.90 ERA that is inflated by one bad outing, when he allowed seven runs against the Red Sox.

Matt McLain Arrives in Cincinnati

Matt McLain (Wareham ‘19) is the latest Cape League star from the 2019 summer to debut in MLB this year. McLain notably was named the West Division All-Star Game MVP. In this game, McLain hit a two-run inside-the-park home run and added another RBI single. In his MLB debut, McLain got his first career hit, turning a routine single into a hustle double. He’s expected to be the Reds everyday shortstop for the foreseeable future.

Is Chris Sale Back?

Chris Sale (Y-D ‘09) delivered his best outing of the season so far. Sale pitched eight innings Saturday, striking out nine and allowing just one run, on a Nolan Arenado home run. Sale threw a season-high 110 pitches, his highest pitch count since July 23, 2019. One of the most impressive notes from Sale’s outing, his velocity remained in the high-90s into the eighth inning with his pitch count already above 100 pitches. His next start is scheduled for Saturday against the Padres.
