The Whitecaps' bench clears in celebration after the final out of their first-ever Cape League title.

In decisive fashion, the Brewster Whitecaps swept the Hyannis Mets in two straight games this weekend (August 12-13) and in so doing captured the 2000 Arnold Mycock Cape League Championship Trophy.

The best hitting team during the regular season, the Whitecaps did not disappoint some 5,000 fans in attendance at McKeon Field Sunday for game two of the best-of-three championship series and gave Mets' ace Matt Coenen (Charleston South) a quick exit after four innings.

Although Coenen showed some of his prior brilliance in retiring the side 1-2-3 in the top of the first, Brewster attacked with a mix of walks, bunts, hits and steals to build an early 5-0 lead against the Mets' southpaw.

While Brewster would eventually add one run to its lead against reliever Greg Conden (George Washington), the Mets could not build on two runs late in the game. Brewster middle reliever George Carralejo (Cal State Fullerton) and closer Mike Sollie (NC State) finished the job and Brewster celebrated its 2000 title midfield to the shouts and applause of the visiting Brewster crowd.

Championship playoff Most Valuable Player honors went deservingly to Whitecaps slugger Jack Headley (Santa Clara). Headley hit .312 during the regular season with 25 RBI to help lead the Whitecaps to the regular season East Division title, the East Division playoffs title and the Cape League Championship title.

In game one between Hyannis and Brewster, the Whitecaps capitalized on two Jeff Bruksch (Stanford) walks in the bottom of the seventh and scored the game's only two runs. Other than that one inning, however, Bruksch had been near perfect, giving up no hits through the fifth and going head-to-head versus Brewster southpaw Ryan Olson (UNLV), a flamethrower in his own right. Olson went 8 innings, allowing just five hits and four walks.
