Managers Milestones … Congratulations to Chatham manager John Schiffner who moved into fourth place on the all-time win list with the A’s 8-3 victory over Hyannis 25 July. The win was the 240th for Schiff and moved him ahead of Bill Livesey (239-157-4) who managed Falmouth from 1965-72 and Wareham in 1976-77. Schiffner is in his 11th season as A’s skipper is now 241-204-10 for a .541 winning percentage. Two days before the win he managed in his 450th game, only the fourth Cape League manager to reach that plateau. Also moving up the wins list is Bourne manager Harvey Shapiro, who is in his first season with the Braves after five years with Falmouth. Bourne’s 5-0 win over Cotuit on 23 July was Shapiro’s 132 placing him 12th, one win ahead of Joe Lewis (131-58-3, Chatham, 1965-69). Shapiro is now 132-118-3 and became the 17th manager to manage 250 games. Reaching the 250 games mark three days earlier was Y-D skipper Scott Pickler. Pickler won his 125th game and moved into 15th place on 20 July when the Red Sox edged Falmouth 1-0. He is 125-127-5 in his sixth season of guiding the Sox. Falmouth skipper Jeff Trundy became the 30th manager with 90 wins when Falmouth beat Bourne 6-2 on 28 July.

Cycling … Yarmouth-Dennis’ Chris Malec (Cal-Santa Barbara) hit for the cycle on 29 June, becoming the first player to do so since Kevin Brown (Hyannis) on 6 July 1998. His five-hit game is the first since Red Sox teammate Wes Whisler did it last year on 4 July. Hitting for the cycle is rarer than a no-hitter and Malec is only the sixth player to accomplish the feat since 1984.
Rodney Nye did it for Harwich on 3 July 1998 and also earned the save in the 8-6 win over Brewster. In 1996 Glenn Davis cycled for Cotuit on 28 June in a 6-5 loss to Chatham. Current San Francisco Giants first baseman J.T. Snow hit for the cycle on 17 July 1988 while playing for Orleans. Dave Nash of Falmouth did it on 14 June 1984. Malec is the only player to get five hits while hitting for the cycle. Brown and Snow were 4-for-4 while the other three went 4-for-5.

Closer Supreme … Chatham A’s closer Zane Carlson will soon be ending his brilliant three summers on the Cape. Carlson, the only pitcher with two consecutive seasons of 10 or more saves (12 in 2001 and 2002), needs one more to make it three. His 33 career saves are first all-time in the league. He moved into second in games pitched with his 57th appearance on 18 July at Brewster and now has 59 (66, Mike Fiala, Hyannis, 1982-84) and is second in relief appearances with 59 (64, Mike Fiala). He is second in strikeouts by a relief pitcher with 86 (108, Jeff Innis, Cotuit, 1981-82) and seventh in relief innings pitched with 63 (Jeff Innis is first with 100.2). He added another line to the CCBL record book when he struck out four batters in an inning on 23 June against Hyannis, tying the league record. Carlson is Baylor’s career save leader with 34 and tied for seventh on the NCAA Division 1 career list. One of the four players he is tied with is Scott Winchester who pitched for Falmouth in 1994 and at Clemson.

Alumni Update … On 20 July the Houston Astro’s Jeff Bagwell (Chatham, 1987-88) hit two home runs to give him 400 career home runs. He is the first Cape League alumni to hit 400 major league home runs. On that same Sunday the White Sox Frank Thomas (Orleans, 1988) also hit two home runs and five days later against Tampa Bay he hit his 400th career home run to become the 36th major league player to hit 400 home runs and the second CCBL alumni.
Bill Mueller (Bourne, 1992) became the 12th major leaguer and the third former Cape Leaguer to hit two grand slams in a game. The first player to switch-hit grand slams, he joins teammate Nomar Garciaparra (Orleans, 1993) and current Yankee Robin Ventura (Hyannis, 1987) as the three alumni to accomplish the feat.
Mueller and Garciaparra along with Todd Walker (Brewster, 1992) and Kevin Millar (Harwich, 1992) combine for an all-cape league infield for the Boston Red Sox. Also both Boston catchers, Jason Varitek (Hyannis, 1991 &1993) and Doug Mirabelli (Hyannis, 1990) spent summers on the Cape. This is the second time in his career that Mueller has been part of a CCBL alumni infield. From 1998-2000 the San Francisco Giants had J.T. Snow (Orleans, 1988) at first, Jeff Kent (Cotuit, 1988) at second, Rich Aurilia (Hyannis, 1991) at short and Mueller at third.
