Nineteen Cape League Players Selected To
Baseball America Preseason All-America Teams

CAPE COD, Mass. – An amazing total of 19 players who performed in the Cape Cod Baseball League during the 2003 and/or 2002 seasons have been selected to the 2004 Baseball America Pre-Season All-America Team.

Baseball America’s All-America team was selected by magazine editors Allan Simpson and John Manuel in conjunction with major league scouting directors and was announced in the College Preview edition of Baseball America.

Six former Cape Leaguers have been selected to the Baseball America First Team, seven players to the Second Team and six to the Third Team.

"That so many Cape Cod League players are represented on Baseball America's teams speaks volumes for the talent playing on the Cape each summer,” said Allan Simpson, Editor, Baseball America . “No other summer league is represented by so many of the nation's top college players. Our preseason All-America teams include the cream of the crop because they are selected by the major league scouting directors; it's a natural by-product that most of the players they identify go on to become premium picks in the draft."

Cape League players on the First Team include outfielders Sam Fuld (Stanford) of the Hyannis Mets, (361 batting average, one home run, 14 RBI) and Jeremy Slayden (Georgia Tech) of the Falmouth Commodores (.231, 5, 13), designated hitter Danny Putnam (Stanford) of Hyannis (2002) and Team USA (2003) and pitchers Jeff Nieman (Rice) of the Harwich Mariners (2-0, 0.00, 19K), Jeremy Sowers (Vanderbilt) of the Wareham Gatemen (4-3, 1.20, 64K) and Wade Townsend (Rice) of Wareham (1-3, 1.82, 39K).

CCBL players on the Second Team are first baseman John Mayberry, Jr. (Stanford) of the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (.375, 0, 10), outfielders Justin Maxwell (Maryland) of the Bourne Braves (.307, 2, 17) and Jonathan Zeringue (LSU) of the Orleans Cardinals (.283, 3, 22), utility man Wes Whisler (UCLA) of Yarmouth-Dennis (.162, 1, 13) and pitchers Phil Humber (Rice) of Yarmouth-Dennis (1-4, 5.28, 35K), Chris Lambert (Boston College) of the Chatham A’s (3-3, 2.12, 56K) and utility pitcher Whisler (0-2, 2.63, 9K).

FALMOUTH BASEBALL DIAMOND TO BE NAMED ARNIE ALLEN FIELD
The Falmouth Board of Selectmen, at their Jan. 26th meeting, voted to name the baseball diamond at Guv Fuller Field in memory of Arnie Allen, a longtime volunteer and supporter.
Until his death from cancer this past October, Arnie had been a fixture with the Commodores for 46 years. Allen was presented with a lifetime achievement award at the Cape League’s Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in 2002.
It is a safe bet that any visitor to a Falmouth Commodores' game the past 50 years would have witnessed Arnie's efforts on behalf of the Commodores and his enthusiasm for the team. The recognition that the town of Falmouth has bestowed upon Arnie is fitting and is applauded by all of the Commodores' fans.

MIKE CARRIER NAMED BOURNE BRAVES GM
The Bourne Braves named longtime volunteer Mike Carrier as its general manager for the 2004 and 2005 seasons, replacing Sean Walsh, who resigned after the 2003 season. Carrier has a long record of public service, not only to the Braves, but to the community and his country. Carrier served the Braves as host parent and concessions chair. He serves as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity as well as Bourne’s youth basketball and softball programs. And for the last 19 years, Carrier has served in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserve. He is a Desert Storm veteran and is currently serving with the Harbor Defense Command in Newport, R.I. as a senior enlisted intelligence specialist.
Carrier is also the Chair of the New Field Committee for the Braves. “I’m hoping to be a vital link between the Board of Directors, the team on the field and the community at large,” said Carrier. “I hope to cultivate an esprit de corps among members of the organization and the members of the general public so we can continue to move the Braves in a positive direction.”
