SANDWICH, Mass. – Another capacity crowd is expected when Cape League Baseball Returns To Sandwich, for the third consecutive year.

Presented by The Community Bank, the game takes place Monday, July 12 beginning at 7 p.m. at Sandwich High School’s Fenton Field. (Kid’s clinic at 5:30 and pre-game show at 6:45.)

Located at Sandwich High School off Exit 3, Route 6, the game features the host Hyannis Mets against the West Division rival Wareham Gatemen.

“We are really happy to work with the Hyannis Mets and bring such a special event to Sandwich, especially one that appeals to so many segments of the community’, said David Curtis, President / CEO for The Community Bank. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase the future of our country…both on the field and in the stands”.

Last season, the game between Hyannis and the Cotuit Kettleers drew an overflow crowd of approximately 3,000 fans, while the 2002 contest between the Mets and the Bourne Braves attracted 1800 people.

“This is a great opportunity for us…visitors travel from all over the country to see Cape League Baseball, and living here on Cape Cod, we tend to take these treasures for granted.’ said Debra Woodman, Chair of the Sandwich Visitor Services Board. ‘Relaxing with family and friends, sitting at a baseball game in the oldest town on Cape Cod… it can’t get much better than that. It is truly part of the Cape Cod summer experience.”

The Mets (8-8) are led by outfielder Jay Miller (Washington St.,.321), infielder Mike Baxter (Vanderbilt, .301), shortstop Justin Tordi (Florida), relief ace Bo Lanier (Georgia) and fire-balling pitcher Mark Sauls (Florida St.).

“After a rough start, the Mets have won six of their last seven games and now have our full roster of players,” said Hyannis Mets GM John Howitt. “Our players enjoy playing a home game in Sandwich under the lights before a big crowd.”

The Gateman (6-11) are paced by pitcher Mark McCormick (Baylor, 1-0, 0.67 ERA), hard-hitting third baseman Warner Jones (Vanderbilt) and local pitcher Tom Thornton (Notre Dame) of Middleboro, Mass.

There will be a kids clinic conducted by the Hyannis Mets with the players and coaches before the game at 5:30 on the adjacent field in Sandwich.

The game is the Cape League Radio Game of the Week on PIXY 103 (102.9 FM) beginning at 6:45 p.m. and can also be heard on Free Teamline on www.hyannismets.org.
