Cape League Season Begins Thursday with Full Slate 

CAPE COD, Mass. – The 121st Cape Cod Baseball League season begins in earnest Thursday (June 16) with a full slate of five games. The Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox begin defense of their league title when they host the inter-divisional rival Hyannis Mets at 5, while the Bourne Braves travel to the Cotuit Kettleers in another 5 p.m. match-up. 
     In other 7 p.m. games, the Falmouth Commodores host the Wareham Gatemen, the Harwich Mariners entertain the Chatham A’s and the Orleans Cardinals are at home against the Brewster Whitecaps.

Yarmouth Chamber Opens CCBL Exhibit June 20th
     For the first time, a local chamber of commerce will devote an entire room to the Cape Cod Baseball League. The Yarmouth Area Chamber of Commerce, located on Rt. 28, has set aside a room in the visitor center to create an area for rotating exhibits that begins with a “Salute to the Red Sox” exhibit. The display will run from June 20 through Oct. 10 and will include historical information, photos, trophies and other memorabilia. In addition, the 2004 Boston Red Sox World Series Trophy will be on display on June 20.

Sets Record With 167 Players Selected In MLB Draft
     The Cape League set a record with 167 players selected in last week’s Major League Baseball Draft. Included were 21 Cape Leaguers selected in the first two rounds, including 10 in the first round and three more in the supplemental round. There were 84 chosen in the top 10 rounds, 106 total in the 18 rounds completed on Tuesday and 60 in rounds 19 – 50.
     Third baseman Ryan Braun (Miami), who hit .318 for Cotuit in 2002 and played for Brewster in 2004, was the top Cape League player selected with the fifth overall pick by the Milwaukee Brewers. Hard-throwing pitcher Wade Townsend of Wareham was picked eighth by Tampa Bay, while outfielder Trevor Crowe of Y-D was picked 14th by Cleveland. Speedy outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury (Oregon State) of Falmouth was the 23rd pick and top reliever Craig Hansen of Harwich was selected 26th by the defending World Champion Boston Red Sox.

Cape League Game Of The Week Begins Monday
The Cape League Radio Game of the Week on PIXY 103 begins Monday with the Brewster Whitecaps at Harwich Mariners game. The broadcast begins with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m. with Larry Egan of Cool 102 calling the play-by-play and John Garner providing the color. The game will also be broadcast on www.capecodbaseball.org and the Harwich Mariners web-site. This game is part of a 10-game package that also includes the All-Star Game in Hyannis and league championship game.

Exhibition Against Touring U.S. Military All-Stars A Success
     The final box score of Cape League Select Team 5, U.S, Military All-Stars 0 only begins to tell the story of last Saturday’s exhibition contest between the touring Armed Forces squad and the Cape Leaguers. Played on a sun-drenched field and 851 fans at McKeon Park in Hyannis, the event showcased a moving pre-game ceremony that included the reigning Ms. Wheelchair America, several veterans from World War II, Korea and the Vietnam conflicts and the U.S. Army Color Guard. Ten CCBL pitchers combined to blank the Military team Sean Riley led the offense going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.
