2005

THURMAN MUNSON
BATTING CHAMPION AWARD

Chris Coghlan

CHATHAM- After battling two Chatham A’s teammates for top honors, Chris Coghlan (Mississippi) finished the season with a .346 batting average, good enough to earn him the Thurman Munson Batting Title in the Cape Cod Baseball League.

During the last few days of regular season play, Coghlan pulled away from teammates Baron Frost (USC) and Alex Presley (Mississippi), who finished regular season play batting .343 and .341 respectably.

Each year, the Thurman Munson Batting title is awarded to the Cape League player who has attainedthe highest batting average at the end of regular season play, and while the race was close, Coghlan certainly earned the honor. He finished the regular season batting .346, with 45 hits, two home runs and 22 RBI in 130 plate appearances.

Coghlan was a big part of the A’s success this season. He helped lead the A’s to second place and a spot in the playoffs. During the playoffs, Coghlan hit an impressive .308 in his three games against the Orleans Cardinals

Coghlan is the first Athletic to win the award in 13 years. The Thurman Munson Batting Title is named after the late Thurman Munson, who died in a plane crash while enjoying a superb career with the New York Yankees in 1979. While playing in the Cape League with the Chatham A’s in 1967, Munson won the batting title with a lusty .420 average in 130 plate appearances.

The Palm Harbor, Fla., native is an asset to both the Rebels and the A’s. In 2004, his rookie season at Ole Miss, Coghlan hit .302 with a .407 slugging percentage.

Other Cape Leaguers who have won the Thurman Munson Batting Title are Jason Varitek (Hyannis, 1993), Chuck Knoblauch (Wareham, 1988), and current Texas Rangers manager Buck Showalter (Hyannis, 1976).
