Third Annual BizWiz Conference Benefits CCBL

HYANNIS - With the Cape Cod Baseball League on the receiving end of a fund-raiser and baseball as the theme, over 600 people reported for spring training at the third annual BizWiz Conference & Marketplace on March 14th at the Four Points by Sheraton Hyannis.

Highlights of the day-long business training and networking event included cutting edge workshop clinics, a trade show of 65 exhibitors, and special fund-raisers for the CCBL.

The keynote speaker for the event, Dr. Charles Steinberg, Executive VP of Public Affairs for the Boston Red Sox, entertained the luncheon crowd with his talk on all things baseball, including how important the CCBL is with providing talent to the major leagues.

The Cape Cod Baseball League was well represented with organizers Randy Shepherd, Kim Wolfe and Peg Rose; Dan Dunn, who ran the silent auction; Dave Bisbee, who sang the national anthem; Randy Shepard of Eye Health Services, who “sheperded” the baseball theme; Paul Galop, Mary Henderson, Bruce Murphy, John Wylde, Bill Bussiere, Phil Edwards, Peter and Diane Troy, Tom Fink; and play-by-play broadcasters Dick Sullivan and John Garner, who entertained the crowds with their running commentary throughout the day.

The CCBL booth was a prominent two-sided display set up by Peter Troy, Fink and Bussiere. Peg Rose and Diane Troy hung posters and T-shirts at the back of the display and enjoyed a few sales.

The 50/50 raffle yielded $350 to the winner and the same to the CCBL thanks to the selling pitch of Fink, who walked around to all the exhibitors who could not leave their booths, and the booming sales voice of Dave Bisbee, bringing people to the booth to “get your 50/50 tickets here” where he, Edwards, Bussiere and Wolfe sold them. Wylde, Henderson and Murphy joined the afternoon shift.

Dunn and Frank Spring kept their eyes on the silent auction items that were scattered throughout the exhibitors. The baseball theme was evident everywhere in the hall and everyone there got at least one copy of the CCBL schedule.

“BizWiz was a huge success because of all the volunteers and the team that worked together to carry it to fruition,” said Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce VP and event organizer Patti Lloyd. “Dr. Charles (Steinberg) had star power and was very down to earth. It was wonderful for so many folks to meet him before his speech and I was even able to get a picture wearing the (world championship)'ring.' The Cape League certainly had great presence and their volunteers showed their true colors and professionalism from beginning to end !”

The Cape Cod Chamber staff, headed by Wendy Northcross, did an outstanding job on BizWiz, along with the energetic Lloyd, Clare O'Connor, who coordinated the workshops, and Sonia Deck, who managed the bulk of pre-registration.
