Mid-Season Report

As we hit the halfway point of the 2006 season, the big story has been the implementation of two new beautiful fields and the most active rainy season in recent memory.

The Brewster Whitecaps dedicated their new ballpark at Stony Brook Field on July 2 before a packed house. Their professional pre-game ceremony honored and recognized many of the founders dating back to 1988 and included well wishes from current major leaguers Sean Casey and Bobby Keilty who played for the Whitecaps.

The Bourne Braves also embraced their new facility on July 4th before throngs of well wishers and founders. Braves Field is a state of the art facility built by local students that one day soon will possess major-league lighting. It was a very proud day for the CCBL volunteers of Brewster and Bourne who ironically both came into the CCBL in 1988, the last time their was expansion.

The wet weather didn’t dampen the dedication festivities at Brewster and Bourne, but it has certainly put a strain on the CCBL schedule. There have been many doubleheaders scheduled for the second half of the season as there have been 27 cancellations through the first half of our 2006 season. The CCBL Executive Committee clearly knew what they were doing in the off-season when they increased roster sizes. Most teams added pitchers who will all see plenty of action with so many make-up games lying ahead.

We were very excited when the Major League Draft concluded in early June and we had 175 former players CCBL drafted. This record-setting number reinforces our objective of guiding and preparing young men for the vocation of playing professional baseball. Major League Baseball Executives apparently agree.

As we begin the push for playoff contention, all ten teams are actively in pursuit of the four playoff positions with the Arnold Mycock Championship Trophy up for grabs. This year appears to be no exception as the team that gets hot at the right time will undoubtedly hoist the hardware at the end of the playoffs. Our loyal fans continue to pack our picturesque ballparks for an evening of wholesome family entertainment for the low, low price of FREE. Norman Rockwell would have been in his glory at any of our ten ballparks. Stop on by on any given night and see why the Cape Cod Baseball League is recognized as the best collegiate summer baseball league in America. I guarantee a wonderful evening and predict you’ll be back for more. It really is that enjoyable!

Best wishes,

-Paul A. Galop, Commissioner
