Next time you’re driving behind a Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority bus, don’t be surprised if you see a banner with the Cape Cod Baseball League logo splashed across the back. The two have teamed up to promote the Cape’s beloved baseball league, where top athletes from around the country come to play each summer.
Headed into its 127th year, the league has many long-standing and close relationships with the communities that house the teams and the local merchants and sponsors who support them. The idea for the banners was pitched in April by CCRTA’s Tom Cahir to Judy Walden Scarafile, Cape League president.
“I nearly fell off the chair,” Scarafile said. “What fantastic advertising for the CCBL. This banner would be seen everywhere, all over the Cape, all the time, all summer.”
The banners say “Support Cape Cod Baseball League, www.capecodbaseball.org.” The image was taken from the 2009 Hall of Fame brochure designed by Lou Barnicle, featuring a classic dusty home plate behind the Cape League logo. Thousands of local drivers and tourists saw the banner last summer.
“I was driving on Route 28 and a bus passed me,” Scarafile said, recounting the first time she saw the banner. “I strained to catch a glimpse in my rearview mirror and I let out a yelp. Wow! It was a thrilling moment to see our beautiful logo on the back of the bus.”
Those involved in putting the banners on the buses hope to draw new fans to the games, which showcase future major league players currently in their college careers. As the league’s slogan says, the Cape is “where the stars of tomorrow shine today.”
Some of the more recognizable names to come through the Cape League include Nomar Garciaparra (Orleans, 1993), Jason Varitek (Hyannis, 1991-93), Jacoby Ellsbury (Falmouth, 2004), Mike Lowell (Chatham, 1994), and Evan Longoria (Chatham, 2005).
Both the Cape League and CCRTA look forward to continuing the trend next summer, with a new banner design to be unveiled in order to maintain a fresh look.
