General Manager for the Y-D Red Sox, Steve Faucher, probably said it best when he called Joe Panik’s 2010 regular season “solid.” That’s really what it was. Panik didn’t take the CCBL by storm by any means, but he was 3rd on the team in batting average (.276), drove in 19 runs, had 40 hits, and hit 2 home runs. He was reliable, playing in all 42 games for the Red Sox that season. It all added up to an All-Star Game nod, where he went 1-2 with a single for the Eastern All-Stars. So, why should we pay extra attention to Panik’s 2010 season? Well, it is simple: he elevated his play significantly once the playoffs hit. In seven games, Panik had 11 hits (.393 average), 3 RBI, 1 home run, 3 walks, and struck out only twice in 28 at-bats. His scorching playoff effort lifted the Red Sox into the Cape Cod League Championship, where they would eventually lose 2-1 to Mike Roberts Cotuit Kettleers. This hot end to the season gave scouts a glimpse of what was to come for Panik, as he was an integral part of the 2014 San Francisco Giants World Series run. Though his work on the diamond has been impressive both in the CCBL and MLB, one of Panik’s top achievements had to have been his Daniel J. Silva Sportsmanship Award for the 2010 season. The award was chosen by the CCBL Umpires for professionalism both on and off the field.
