Kyle Seager Retires After 11 Seasons In Seattle

Seattle Mariners’ cornerstone third baseman, Kyle Seager, announced last week that after 11 seasons, he was putting an end to his playing career. Before spending his entire career in Seattle, Seager spent two summers on the Cape playing for the Chatham Anglers in 2007 and 2008. Seager was one of the best hitting second basemen in the ACC for the University of North Carolina Tarheels, and he kept that rolling on the Cape. In his two seasons with the Anglers, Seager played in 61 games, hitting .281 with 10 doubles and 25 RBI.

While he might not have had either the trophies that one would hope for in a career, Kyle Seager was the personification of what it means to be a good leader. While the Mariners never made it to the playoffs during Seager’s tenure, he stuck around through up and down, building the framework for the young Mariners team coming up. 2021 proved to be a great example of this, as the Mariners won 90 games for the first time since 2003. Seager’s consistency was crucial to this, as he played a leadership role in his final years to younger players such as JP Crawford and Jarred Kelenic.

Although he only appeared in one All-Star Game, Seager was consistent both in the field and at the plate. Kyle spent only one stint on the injured list, when he underwent surgery on his left hand in 2019. Seager ended his big-league career with a career high 35 home runs and 101 RBI in 2021, the first time eclipsing 100 RBI in his career.

From everyone at Cape Cod Baseball League, we want to say thank you to Kyle Seager for the memories and enjoy a happy retirement!
