Jarren Duran Showing Potential

Jarren Duran (Wareham ‘17) appears to be putting it together in his third MLB season. In a small sample size so far this season, Duran is slashing .400/.425/.629 with a 185 OPS+. Last week Duran went 10-24 at the plate, good for a .417 batting average. His best performance came Tuesday night, when he had three hits, including a grand slam, and scored three runs. Due to the Red Sox injury issues, Duran should have an extended opportunity to prove he belongs on the big-league roster for the rest of the season!

Zac Gallen’s Dominance Continues

Zac Gallen’s (Chatham ‘14/’15) dominant start to the season continued this week. Gallen made two starts, allowing zero runs over 13.1 innings and striking out 23 batters. It lowered Gallen’s ERA on the season to 2.15 and extended his scoreless innings streak to 28 innings. After receiving Cy Young votes in two of the past three seasons, Gallen looks poised to make a run at the award again. He currently leads MLB in innings (37.2), strikeouts (51), and WHIP (0.77).

Max Muncy’s Week On & Off The Field

Max Muncy (Wareham ‘10/’11) currently leads MLB in home runs (11) and slugging percentage (.718). After a relatively down year in 2022, coming off a partially-torn UCL injury, Muncy is performing like the player he was from 2018 to 2021. Muncy went 4-12 at the plate last week, but all four of his hits were home runs. To cap off his week, Muncy was placed on the paternity list as he prepares to welcome his second child into the world.

Strider Comes Close to History

Spencer Strider (Falmouth ‘18) took a perfect game into the seventh inning and a no-hitter into the eighth inning Monday against the Marlins. While an error and a bloop single ultimately kept Strider from making history, he did break another franchise record. Strider’s 13 strikeout performance was his ninth straight start with at least nine strikeouts, breaking John Smoltz’s franchise record of eight consecutive. His next start is against their division rivals, the Mets, who are the second toughest team to strikeout in MLB.

Weekly Walk-offs

Blake Sabol (Wareham ‘17 / Chatham ‘18) had a memorable moment in his young career Tuesday night. With the Giants trailing by one, and down to their final strike, Sabol hit a two-run walk-off home run, 428 feet to center field. Nick Senzel (Brewster ‘15) had a two-run walk-off home run of his own Wednesday afternoon, completing a Reds sweep of the Rangers. DJ LeMahieu (Harwich ‘08) had a slightly less exciting walk-off over the weekend. With the bases loaded and no outs in a tie game, LeMahieu delivered a walk-off single for the Yankees.
