Official Press Release
June 14-June 22

Sportsticker selects Players of the Week:
Cotuit's Pete Stonard and Orlean's Brian Rogers have been named the Coca-Cola Player and Pitcher of the Week for June 14-22nd.

Stonard (Ladue, MO/Alabama) seemed to have no problem adjusting to wooden bats or Cape pitching. He was 11-for-30 (.367) with one double, nine RBI and two stolen bases.

On the mound, Rogers (Marietta, GA/Georgia Southern) started two games and won as many for the Cardinals. In 12 innings of work, he shut down the opposition, scattering five hits, while walking two and striking out 14.

Cotuit's Lee Mitchell (Carterville, GA/Georgia) cranked three roundtrippers for the undefeated Kettleers to capture the week's home run title.

Stay in School:
The Orleans Cardinals visited four schools in four days to stress the importance of staying in school. The local schools visited during the opening days of the season were Orleans, Wellfleet, Eastham and Truro. The players spoke to the children about the importance of keeping up with their schoolwork so they could play ball. They then answered questions, signed autographs and posed for pictures.

Time Change for Orleans on 6/26:
The U.S Marine Corps band will play in Orleans on June 26. Game time has been pushed back to 7:45 p.m. The Cardinals will play host to the Bourne Braves.

Chatham plays hosts to Young Presidents Organization Special Baseball Clinic:
On June 21, Chatham's Veterans Field played host to 20 inspiring ballplayers. The youngsters were children of the Young Presidents organization, which was meeting at Chatham Bars Inn. Coaching the visitors were Chatham's Field Manager John Schiffner, Assistant Coach Matt Fincher and player Colt Morton (Loxahatchee, FL/NC State). Representing the Brewster Whitecaps were Field Manager Dave Barnard and player Jayce Tingler (Smithville, MO/Missouri). Helping out for the Orleans Cardinals were assistant coach Kelly Nicholson and player Brett Smith (La Habra, CA/ California Irvine) while the Y-D Red Sox Field Manager Scott Pickler and player Ryan Coultas (Ventura, CA/California Davis) also lent a hand.

New dugouts in Harwich to be dedicated June 29:
The Harwich Mariners will officially dedicate their new dugouts at Whitehouse Field on June 29 in honor of Victor Simches. His son, Gerald, and Gerald's son and daughter each contributed to this memorial gift. The ceremony, which was originally slated for June 15th but was rained out, will begin at 6:30 p.m. GM Michael DeAnzeris will be Master of Ceremonies.

And from the league historian:
Bourne has won three straight 1-0 games, which is believed to be a league first. Orleans won three straight shutouts in 1970 and Falmouth won four straight in 1996, but none were by a 1-0 margin.

This feat ties the Major League record for most consecutive 1-0 games won. It has happened once in the American League (Chicago in 1909) and once in the National League (St. Louis in 1917).

Cotuit has opened the season with eight straight wins. The record is 11 by Falmouth in 1967. In 1964 Cotuit won eight straight to open the season, so they have tied the franchise mark. In 1979, Hyannis opened with nine straight wins and went 11 straight (10-0-1) before losing. Bruce Hack, CCBL Historian.

Keyspan to sponsor Keyspan Homeruns for Housing:
For every Cape League home run this season, Keyspan will donate $100 to the Housing Assistance Corporation. Last year, the league hit 137.

The best pre-game ceremony without a game:

The Yarmouth-Dennis organization holds the unofficial record for the best pre-game ceremony without an actual game played. On June 15, the Red Sox honored the New York firefighters and their families. The ceremony featured a 90x40 American flag, which was unfurled with the help of 40 volunteers from the Red Sox organization and the Eye Health Booster club.

The eye of the beholder: Hyannis player Ben Harrison (Key West, FL/Florida) visited Eye Health Services to get some new contacts. Ironically he hit a home run that night to win the game and hit another in his next game.
