Cape League Schedule Washed Out


CAPE COD, Mass. – Steady rains washed out seven Cape League games the last two days and forced two other contests to be called after five innings. The Chatham at Cotuit and Brewster at Harwich games originally scheduled for Saturday have been re-scheduled for June 26 and July 2. All five of the games Sunday were rained out and rescheduled – YD at Bourne for June 26; Cotuit at Hyannis and Orleans at Wareham for July 2 and Harwich at Chatham and Falmouth at Brewster for July 8. 


Hyannis and Falmouth are Nantucket Bound

     Scenic Tom Nevers Field, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, will be the site of the 2nd annual Nantucket Pennant Game between the Falmouth Commodores and the host Hyannis Mets Saturday (June 28) at 2 p.m.
     Last season, the Commodores posted a 5-3 win before 750 people and the Mets are out for revenge in 2003. Event sponsors for the Nantucket Pennant Game include Hy-Line Cruises, AK Diamonds Restaurant and the Nantucket Bank. Both teams and their fans will travel over and back on the Hy-Line ferry, while 14 players and coaches will host both a Base Ruth and Little league clinic before the game. The Nantucket Chamber of Commerce will provide ground transportation.
     Larry Maury, a local contractor involved with Babe Ruth baseball on the island, designed and built the beautiful complex. Both teams will be treated to a Cape Cod clambake following the game. -John Garner, Jr., CCBL Director of Public Relations & Broadcasting 


Bullpen Ace Austin Tubb Saves Hyannis Mets

     Submarine pitcher Austin Tubb has been one of the early-season success stories for the Hyannis Mets, saving all four of their five wins. The right-hander from Mississippi State has compiled a perfect 0.00 ERA in 5.1 innings pitched. 
     Other top hurlers for the Mets include Tim Morley (2-0, 2.86 ERA) of Wake Forest, Tim Sabo (1-0, 0.82) of Seton Hall, A.J. Shappi (1-0, 1.00 ERA) of Cal Riverside, Zack Jackson (1-0, 1.29) Louisville and Jon Lewis (Stoney Brook, 1-0, 1.80). Hyannis is third in the Cape League with an impressive 1.88 team ERA.
     Ryan Baty (Kansas) is sixth in the league in batting (.296) and Jonathan Tucker (Florida) is ninth (.280) and leads the CCBL in steals (4). The Mets are third in the league in hitting (.207) and is number one in steals (12).
     After a 3-0 win over Harwich Friday night, Hyannis played Cotuit to a 1-1 tie in a game called after five innings. Sean Walker (Baylor) allowed just one hit.
     Baty, Brett McMillian (UCLA) and Mets GM John Howitt were featured in-studio on New England Cable News “Late Night” Saturday with weekend sports anchor Mike Giardi.

Bourne Rides the Strong Arms of Starting Pitcher to Success

     The Braves, currently riding a three game win streak, can attribute their early season success to the strength of their starting pitching. Eric Beattie (Tampa), Dennis Bigley (Oral Roberts), and Kyle Schmidt (Georgia Tech) have yet to allow an earned run, while Jeff Dagenhart (William and Mary) sits, tied atop the leader board in wins (2). Beattie, Schmidt, and Dagenhart are also among the league leaders in strikeouts.
     Clifton Remole (Georgia Tech) hit his league leading second and third double of the season in an 8-1 win at Harwich Wednesday. Justin Maxwell (Maryland) scored two of the eight Brave’s runs running his total to six, just one shy of the league’s leader.

Cotuit Battles Cape League Teams and Weather 

     A wet week on the Cape forced three rainouts for the Kettleers. Wednesday night’s game at YD was pushed to Thursday. Saturday’s games versus Chatham will be made up Thursday, June 26 and Sunday’s game at Hyannis will be made up on Thursday July 2. The Kettleers will now play 15 straight games through Tuesday, July 8.
     Cotuit picked up its first win Monday against Wareham 3-1 at Cool 102’s Radio Game of the Week. Josh Deel (Jacksonville) got the win after entering the game in the seventh inning. He replaced starter Garry Bakker (North Carolina) who pitched six solid innings only allowing one run.
     John Hardy (Arizona) had two hits Friday in a 6-5 loss at Bourne, raising his average to .286 and placing him among the league leaders in batting. He leads the Kettleers with six hits for the season. –Gregory Feeley CCBL PR (508) 432-9786


Wareham Looking to Catch a Break

     The Gatemen dropped four out of five games this past week, despite several notable performances on the hill and at the plate. Kevin Guyette (Arizona) pitched eight strong innings giving up just one run and striking out four in a loss to Cotuit Monday. Jeremy Sowers (Vanderbilt) pitched eight innings of two hit baseball in a loss to Falmouth Friday, allowing one run and striking out 12. Sowers leads the Cape League with 19 strike outs on the season.
     The Gatemen defeated the Chatham A’s Tuesday. Andy LaRoche (Grayson County) went 2-2, RBI and scored a run. LaRoche leads the Cape League in runs scored and is among the league leaders in average and hits.

Sues and Anderson lead Commodores 

     The Falmouth Commodores stand at third place in the West Division currently with a 4-3-1 record.
Standouts for the Commodores include 2B Drew Anderson (Ohio State) and pitcher Jeff Sues (Vanderbilt) Anderson ranks eighth in the league for hitting with a .286 batting average. Sues has pitched 12 innings, allowing just one earned run while giving up four hits striking out 12 and walking 10.
     In Saturdays 1-1 tie vs. Hyannis Sues threw five innings, giving up one run on four hits.

Twomley Leads the League with .438 Batting Average 

     Jason Twomley (UMass) currently leads the CCBL with the highest batting average at .438. He has helped improve the Whitecaps’ overall team batting average to .249, currently highest of the league. Overall, Twomley has two homeruns with five RBI’s. Against Hyannis Tuesday evening, Jason went 3-3 with 4 RBI’s. 
     Bret Butler (USC) currently holds a 1-0 record with a 0.00 ERA after 10 innings pitched with six strikeouts. Brewster leads the East Division with a record of 4-2. Brewster’s game at Harwich on Saturday night was rained out and will be made up on June 26. Avery with 2 Wins in 1 Week 

     James Avery (Niagara) leads the East Division in wins with a record of 2-0. After his shutout against Falmouth last week, he gets another against Y-D on Friday night. Avery has an impressive 11 strikeouts in 13 innings pitched with a 0.00 ERA. His performance has helped Chatham hold the lowest ERA in the CCBL at 1.17. 
     Along with good pitching, Jeff Frazier (Rutgers) and Ryan Klosterman (Vanderbilt) have led the A’s to a strong presence behind the plate. Combined the two Chatham players have five doubles, Klosterman with three and Frazier with two. Bryan Pritz (Richmond) batted in his first homerun right over the left-field fence against Y-D on Friday. 
     Chatham holds a 4-3 record and is trailing Brewster and Y-D in the Eastern Division. Chatham’s game at Cotuit went 2 innings before being called for inclement weather. Orleans Looks to Improve in Weeks to Come 

     Orleans started the 2003 season with a 2-5 start, but the Cardinals have showed outstanding individual performances. Will Startup (U of Georgia) holds a 0.96 ERA after 9.1 innings pitched and has struck out seven batters. Mike Swindle (Oklahoma) racked up a win on Friday night against the Whitecaps and had four strikeouts in only two innings pitched. After the first 7 games, Ryan Roberson (George Washington) is batting a .333 with 9 hits. Brett Smith (UC Irvine) has a perfect ERA with a 0.00 after 7 innings pitched he holds 11 strikeouts. 
     Orleans had an impressive showing against Wareham on Wednesday, when the beat the Gatemen 11-1. The Cardinals had a total of 12 hits, with 11 runs. Orleans has only had one rainout, despite the weather conditions. –Sarah Hinkley CCBL PR (508) 432-7288 


Y-D’s Record Improves after the Arrival of Hyung Cho 

     Yarmouth-Dennis has an overall record of 5-3, and three of the wins came last week after Hyung Cho’s (U of Houston) arrival. Cho drove straight from Houston, arrived at 12 AM Monday night, and was ready to play Tuesday afternoon. Cho leads the league with six RBI’s (3 of which came in Tuesday night’s 4-2 win over Orleans), slugged two homeruns, and is consistent at the plate. 
     Jim Brauer (Michigan) holds a 1.80 ERA after 10 innings pitched with 10 strikeouts. John Meloan (Arizona) leads the East Division with two saves early in the season. During Monday’s game against the Harwich Mariners, P.J. Finigan (Southern Illinois) clenched the save after pitching four innings and striking out five batters. Ninety yards away, his catcher, Rob Johnson (USC) had 2 hits with 2 RBI’s.

Reynolds continues to swing a hot bat 

     Mark Reynolds (Virginia) is the Mariners leading hitter with a .412 batting average is currently second in the league in hitting and Steve Van Note (Delaware) is the lone Home Run hitter for the Mariners with a .250 batting average in 7 games.
     Pitching for the Mariners, Robert Swindle, (Charleston Southern) holds a 2.40 ERA with 10 strikeouts and 1 walk. Swindle leads the league for most innings pitched.
     The Mariners currently hold a 2.95 ERA and stand with a .177 batting average putting them in tenth place.

Chatham and Falmouth to Host Next Two Cool 102 Games of the Week

     The next two Captains Parker’s Cape League Games of the Week on Cool 102 include Hyannis at Chatham Monday, June 23 at 7 p.m. and Hyannis at Falmouth Monday, June 29 at 7 p.m. Larry Egan and John Garner will bring the live action from the field on 101.9 FM.

     College Sports Television’s sojourn through the Cape League continues this week with several games being broadcast nationally on a tape delay basis. Jack Edwards and Hal Morris will bring the live action from the field for CSTV.
