“Thar She Blows!” SANDWICH, Mass. – “Whale Sea You on the Field of Dreams” is the name of the whale that will be located at Heritage Museums & Gardens this season. The whale is part of the Whale Trail, which can be viewed on Cape Cod from late May through October. Heritage’s whale has been co-sponsored by generous contributions from Randall C. Shepard, CEO of Eye Health Services, and from Heritage Museums & Gardens.
The Heritage whale will spout scenes from the Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame on the Heritage grounds. The whale will be located in a garden across from the front door of the American History Museum, home to the Hall of Fame exhibit. The CCBL will transport the whale to its All-Star Game at Yarmouth-Dennis’ Red Wilson Field on July 29. Based on the other successful animal parades across the country, The Whale Trail concept made its debut in southeastern Connecticut during the summer of 2005. After the whale is sponsored and transformed into a work of art, it will be auctioned off with proceeds of the whale going to the non-profit organization of the sponsor’s choice. Eye Health Services has long enjoyed a relationship with the Cape Cod Baseball League and now brings new technology to Cape Cod with its relationship with Nike and their Nike MaxSite products. Eye Health has the Cape Cod arrangement for the Nike MaxSite Sports Specific Contact Lenses and the Nike Sunglasses V. Carbon Series that members of the Boston Red Sox currently wear during the game.
Barnstable Bat, the renowned wood bat manufacturer on Cape Cod, has donated a bat which this special baseball whale will be holding. The sunglasses on the whale will be replicated by artist Karen Rinaldo of Falmouth, the artist chosen to paint the Heritage whale. She will be painting in the foyer of the Shaker Round Barn during the first two weeks of May. The public is invited to watch. “It is a ‘whale’ of an idea to see the beauty of art and the art of baseball through the eyes of artist Karen Rinaldo,” said Shepard. “So often we do not stop to enjoy the visions of Cape Cod and what it has to offer.” "We are absolutely thrilled to be participating in the Whale Trail promotion for Cape Cod. The baseball whale will afford us the perfect opportunity to promote the Cape League Hall of Fame at Heritage," said CCBL President Judy Walden Scarafile.
"We are most grateful to Randy Shepard of Eye Health Services and to Heritage Museums and Gardens for making this possible. Thank you also to Barnstable Bat for its contribution. It is all about teamwork ... and this is a perfect example of that." Heritage Museums & Gardens is located off Route 130 at the junction of Pine and Grove Streets in Sandwich. The museum is open seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens, $6 for youths ages 6 to 16, and free for members and children five and under.
