ORLEANS, Mass. -- After saving 13 games and posting a 1.23 ERA for the Orleans Firebirds, Trevor Gott has been selected as the Russell Ford Relief Pitcher of the Year in the Cape Cod Baseball League.

The Kentucky Wildcat is a former Gatorade Player of the Year in Kentucky and this summer pitched the Firebirds into the CCBL Playoffs with his lights-out mound work.

This award is fitting for Orleans reliever, as Russell Ford was an instrumental fixture in Orleans and was also the CCBL president from 1978-83.

Gott established himself as closer for the Firebirds early in the season, logging four saves in his first five mound appearances. He was selected to the Eastern Division All- Star team, hurling one inning and striking out two of the three batters he faced in the game played at Fenway Park.

The fire-balling right-hander made scouts’ heads turn and opposing batters shake walk away frustrated whenever he took the mound. Field Manager Kelly Nicholson always felt comfortable whenever he sent his young closer to the mound.

Gott, who stands 6’0, has good command of his fastball that reached the high 90’s at times this summer. He also had great movement with a cut fastball that often left batters stymied at the plate.

Even more impressive was his finishing the season with a perfect 13-for-13 in save opportunities. During the regular season, in 18 appearances, he posted a 1.23 ERA. This allowed him to lead the league among relievers and he also led the league in saves. Other impressive stats include his allowing only allowed 4 walks over the 2011 campaign while only surrendering 14 hits.

During his freshman year at Kentucky last spring, Gott pitched in relief for the ‘Cats and in 11 appearances didn’t allow any runs. Gott finished the season with a 2-4 record in 27.1 innings, posting a 3.62 ERA with two saves and an impressive 34 strikeouts.
