Chatham A's: Season Review

Chatham Athletics
2007 Season Review

(25-16-3 – 2nd in East)
(Lost, 2 games to 0, to Y-D in Divisional Series)

CHATHAM, Mass. – A record-setting manager, a trip to the playoffs and several outstanding individual performers made 2007 a memorable season for the Chatham A’s.

Chatham finished second in the East Division to qualify for the post-season, but the A’s were eliminated in two straight games by eventual champion Yarmouth-Dennis in the Divisional Series.

The A’s had the Cape Cod Baseball League’s second highest team batting average (.266) and their pitchers compiled a staff earned run average of 3.59, which ranked sixth in the league.

The summer also marked the record-breaking 335th victory for A’s field manager John Schiffner. The memorable win came in the form of a 10-1 romp over the Bourne Braves at Veterans Field. Schiffner had been tied with Don Reed, who managed for 13 seasons at Yarmouth-Dennis and Wareham.

Schiffner’s players had some standout performances as well.

Outfielder Addison Johnson (Clemson) led the league with 32 runs scored, and was fifth in hits with 48. Johnson had a .271 batting average and 11 runs batted in.

Left-handed pitcher Tom Milone (Southern California) tied for the league lead in victories with six and was one of only four pitchers to notch a shutout in 2007. He finished with just one loss while compiling a 2.92 ERA in 52.1 innings of work. Milone was one of five pitchers selected for the All-League Team

A’s first baseman Allan Dykstra (Wake Forest) drove in 31 runs to place third in the league, and was selected for the All-League Team. Dykstra was second among A’s hitters with 24 runs scored and finished with a .308 batting average.

Infielder Jermaine Curtis (UCLA) also snagged a spot on the All-League Team. Curtis batted .295 with 36 hits, three home runs and 24 RBI.
