TBT: Chatham's JD Davis Earns East MVP Honor
Feature from 2013 CCBL Postseason Media Guide
It’s not often that a player who doesn’t even start a game ends up Most Valuable Player. In the case of the Chatham Anglers’ JD Davis (Cal St. Fullerton), it was hard not to give him the East MVP crown at the 2013 Friendly’s Cape League All-Star game on Saturday.
Davis made the most of both of his at-bats, launching a three-run home run in the sixth and doubling and scoring a run in the eighth. He played a part in scoring all of the East’s final four runs.
“I’m on cloud nine,” Davis said. “Just to be one of 50 kids selected out of 250, it’s a great opportunity and it’s very humbling.”
Davis made it to the final round of the pre-game hitting contest, with seven shots in the first round, but could not hit any in the final round. But when it counted the most, he took his first pitch of his first at-bat, a high fastball, and smacked it to center field for the most exciting hit of the ballgame.
Davis is having a phenomenal summer. Now with an East All-Star MVP award to add to great regular-season numbers for the top team in the Cape League, the only thing more to add would be a championship.
“I think we have great chances,” he said. “We’re one of the hottest hitting teams in the league. Our team chemistry is great.”
The Chatham Anglers are mere games away from clinching the East Division and very well could be on their way to their first league title since the turn of the century. With Davis on their team, it may just happen. “That would be just the greatest year wrap-up ever.”
